NWR: Juicing Question

I know a few of you are on the juicing bandwagon and I just had some questions! My sister bought me a juicer as a shower gift and I think I'm going to start using it this weekend.

1. Do you have any juicing recipes you would like to recommend? I found some online but would love to hear your favorite juices.

2. How long does fresh juice stay good for in the fridge? Ideally, I would like to make a large batch and keep servings in the fridge for an easy go to meal.

TIA!!

Re: NWR: Juicing Question

  • I haven't used my juicer in quite a while (trying to save money - takes a lot of fruit and veggies to make juice) - but I love just making fresh orange or apple juice.  My FI and I watched "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" and got on a huge juice kick last fall.  We were juicing everything - beets, carrots, spinach.  There's some pretty good recipes on that movie's sister site - I forget what it is but you can google "Reboot your life".

As for freshness, it doesn't keep long.  The juice has a lot of pulp in it, and it turns brown pretty fast, and the flavor of the juice is ruined.  Someone may have some tips for how to keep this from happening, but I haven't figured it out.  I always ended up getting up early and mostly just juicing for breakfast.
  • I don't make my own - I buy them - but I think Butterfly has a few recipes to share! I usually stick to green juices though - spinach, kale, celery, apple, etc.

  • I usually buy my own too :( it really just isn't worth it to buy hundreds of dollars of greens/herbs/etc. to attempt to juice myself when it comes out better at the juicers too!!

My favorite combo that I HAVE made myself is apple-carrots-parsley-ginger. You can also add mixed greens to that.

My "daily" juice is mixed greens (kale, spinach, cabbage, chard...anything in season and fresh that the juicers have!) + cucumber + ginger + herbs + apple juice to lighten it up. MMMMMM. I am thirsty just thinking about it.

Unless you use a "slow" juicer and bottle the juice yourself, it will NOT last longer than 3 hours or so.  There are different types of juicers - the traditional, fast zizzing one is probably what you have, and that juice will start to get icky after 3 hours (this is what my juicing friends have told me - even putting it in the fridge won't stop the bacteria from growing).

If you have a slow juicer (this is the type of juicer that makes the juice for cleanses that gets bottled up), this is the stuff that will last longer - usually a week or so.

I have been more into making smoothies at home, to be totally honest with you.  Less messy and easier/more cost efficient for me to do!! My juicers do something they call "Blended juices" which I think are awesome too - for things like mango, blueberries, blackberries, etc., that it wouldn't make sense to juice, they will juice fresh apples, pears, whatever goes with the other fruit, and then take the fresh apple juice and blend it in a blender with the non-juiceable fruit (hopefully that makes sense).  They have an awesome combination that is blackberries, fresh mint, and coconut oil, blended with fresh apple juice. OH MY GOD it is to die for.
  • I'm getting thirsty just reading this! Butterfly, you should have them add in some pineapple to that blackberries/mint/coconut/apple blend. Pineapple, Apple, Mint is my FAVORITE non-green juice.

  • Thank you SO much ladies!! I don't think I have a juicing place near me, unfortunately.  I already have apples, strawberries, carrots and celery on hand, so I just have to buy a few more veggies and then I can start! I'm not sure what type of juicer I have since I'm at work, but it's most likely the fast kind. I tried looking it up on macys website but I can't remember the brand!

Butterfly, I was on a smoothie kick for awhile! They were my go to breakfast for quite a few months :) I always try to add flaxseed also for extra fiber/nutrients

  • beachlover if you are a smoothie fan, definitely try making fresh apple juice and adding that to your smoothies!!

My juicers have a smoothie they call an Apple Crunch that is one of my favorite breakfasts. THe base is a banana, then they add fresh apple juice, and blend it with a little vanilla, a little cinnamon, almond milk, and some fresh GRANOLA!!! OMG to die for.

have fun juicing!! if you have other questions let us know!!

bridetobe - ummmmm pineapple would be amazing in that one. I need to try that ASAP.
  • I just made my first juice! I did kale, apple and carrot... omg I'm officially addicted! I have lots of other veggies and fruits to use this weekend.

  • Dr Oz's green drink is INCREDIBLE!!  I juice everything but the spinach and parsley ( I blend that)  I make a batch that usually lasts 2-3 days.  I guess I agree that all the juice I make turns brown but just like an apple that's just from it hitting the oxygen, it still tastes fine, it's just not as pretty.  WholeLiving magazine online has a ton of juice recipes as well!
