beverage service, Drinks & Bar

The closer our date gets the more worried I've become about our Venue's restrictions on liquor consumption.  We are not aloud to serve any hard liquor, fine no open bar.  We will be serving our guests Beer, Wine & Champagne as long as it's served by approved catering staff, which is great! no corkage!  The problem is, venue only allows us to bring enough alcohol  in for each guest to consume 2.5 drinks all night.  This number seems really low to me, I don't want to run out of alcohol midway into the party! Yikes!  our reception length 4pm to 9pm thoughts?

Re: beverage service, Drinks & Bar

  • Only you know your crowd, but those restrictions would never work for us.   Most people I know will drink 2-3 drinks the first 1-1.5 hours and then at least 1 every hour after that.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I totally think your right!  These restrictions seem way to tight to me.  My Caterer is on my venues preferred list and she expressed to me that their may be some wiggle room.  She said "we need to feel them out when we do our walk through w/the coordinator at the venue"  I almost feel like telling friends to bring a flask just in case!Wink Our wedding is Aug 19th and everything is planned so I think changing venues just because of this would also be crazy!
  • What kind of venue is this? For such strict restrictions? I've never heard of this. :/
  • I also agree I've never heard of this.

My recommendation would be to talk to the caterer seriously about what they suspect the venue's intentions are. If they are an "approved caterer" they have probably worked with this venue before.

If I had this issue, I would probably have the bar open for about 30 minutes before dinner, then shut it down during dinner, then reopen after the cake is served. I would also have multiple extras in someone's van or trunk for the caterer or authorized staff to obtain if needed.
  • Our Venue is a Town owned and managed Historic Estate.  The Estate has huge park like grounds and we are doing the entire event outdoor in their pavilion area.  I think they have an extensive contract with rules and restrictions to cover the Towns legal obligations so they arn't sued.  The office lady said they need to protect them selves incase on the off chance something could happen.  We have only talked to the women that work in the onsite office Monday through Friday.  On the "day of" there will be a grown's Manager onsite.  I think this person is more like a worker that makes sure deliveries are put in the right place?  I'm wondering if that "day of" staff member is really going to count how many wine bottles and kegs we have?  IDK?
  • That just makes no sense. Unless they require you to give out non-transferrable drink tickets to each guest, they cannot make sure each guest only has 2.5 drinks.  Even if you only buy enough for each person to have 2.5 drinks, it would be easy enough for a faster drinker to get smashed while I'm slowly sipping a glass of wine.  Did you know about this policy when you signed your contract?  Does your contract with the venue mention this?
