Attire question

Hi ladies,
Some of our guests are already asking what type of attire should be worn to our beach wedding (is this formal or casual?). Well, we're kind of between casual and semiformal and I know that I cannot dictate what my guests wear (I don't want to anyway!). I also know that in general the formality of the wedding invitation sets the tone for attire but I'm not convinced it will.

To help guests plan, does anyone have any suggestions for how to explain this when people ask? My brother's FI suggested "comfortably dressy" which I like but thought I'd see what others thought. Thanks!

Re: Attire question

  • I keep saying "Beach Chic" and "Resort Attire" to everyone.  Summer dresses, khakis and light button downs.
  • I have been telling people that the wedding is on the beach (so girls know heels would be impractical) and that the resort requires long pants on guys in the restaurants so they know. If they ask for specifics, I just say sundress for girls and khakis/button ups for guys.

I think it's only rude if you assume they don't know how to dress and preemptively tell them what to wear. If they ask, just say what you think will be appropriate.

  • Everything cevans said. That is exactly how I've been handling it.
  • I agree I have also been telling beach attire I just want everyone to be comfortable and not to hott.

  • Thanks, ladies! I've been having trouble answering if when someone asks me directly because I don't want to seem rude. The advice is much appreciated and now I know how to proceed :-)

  • I had this problem too.  We didn't want to tell people what to wear, but a lot of people were asking questions about it.  Even my dad (who is walking me down the aisle) asked if he could wear a polo and shorts haha

We broke down and added a little note on our website that says the ceremony is: "Beach Formal (i.e., slacks/summer dresses, but hold the tie if you'd like)"
