Mom's Dress

Good Morning Ladies!  My mom is having a tough time finding a dress/suit.  We've looked at JCP, Dress barn, Lane Bryant & DB.  She is not comfortable in anything low cut or too tight.  I told her that if she wants to wear a pants suit, that would be ok too (she has never been comfortable in dresses).  So I guess my question is, what are your mom's wearing?  Where did they find their outfit?

Re: Mom's Dress

  • My mom is wearing a cute black skirt she got at JCP, and a black skirt. With some sort of pink accessory. My mom isn't a fan of dresses, so I told her to find something that she'd be comfortable in, and I'm actually loving her choice, she looks so cute :)

  • My mom hasn't picked anything out yet, though she has bought five dresses and taken all of them back. A lot of the dresses we really liked, but she said weren't the 'one.' She's had a lot of luck at Nordstrom (or look at Nordstrom Rack if you have one near you), depending on your mom's budget. Here's a link to their MOB section.

PS: My mom is a bit overweight, and she is also self-concious about anything too low-cut or tight.

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • My mom actually just bought her dress this week, I think at Dillards.
She had these pants she wanted to wear, but I'm not a fan so I was lobbying for something else, but told her they'd be fine if she really wanted to wear them.  She has this "I'm too fat to wear a dress" complex going, but she actually found one she loves... so everyone is happy :)
Its a black tea length dress with 3/4 sleeves and pretty detailing on the neckline and cuffs of sleeves.

Thanks for sharing the link. My mom is also very self conscience and over weight. Plus it will be the first time she's seen my dad in 7 years after a ridiculously ugly divorce. I have a feeling that her finding a dress she will be comfortable in will be a challenge :/

<div>For my sister's wedding, my mom had four dresses, and didn't decide until the morning of the wedding which one she'd wear. It was frustrating, so I've just let it go at this point. As long as she's comfortable in what she's wearing, it doesn't matter, right?</div>

  • Well this was a tough one. My mom thought a BM dress (in a different color) would work. So we, and my father went to Alfred Angelo and she tried some on. She liked a few but then she tried on some short ones and I held up my phone with my sister trying on her BM dress. My mom looked like a BM. So that was quickly cut.

We then convinced her to try on the MOB outfits (she was avoiding them as they look "old"). Well we found one she liked..... here's the top <--clicky. we will be taking those flutter sleeves off and it will be with a skirt and in red

  • My Mom is wear a knee length purple dress. It has little cap sleeves on it (if my memory serves me right). She got her dress at JCPenny when they were having a really big sale. So she has had her dress since this summer.

  • My mom ordered a MOB dress that I don't think is "old looking" at all... we both LOVE it and I think it is SUPER flattering on her!  She hasn't gotten it in yet, but here are a few pics.  The size wasn't quite right so she ordered a size up and plans on getting it altered properly.  This might not be an option for you though because it could take up to 6 months to get in and cost more for rush charges. :(

  • My mom is very tall and is just big boned. She has a lot of luck shopping online at OneStopPlus.com. She is wearing a floral printed skirt and a solid colored top unless she decides to wear the dress I bought her as a Christmas present.
  • My mom also found her dress at JCP.  We were supposed to go shopping together.  She happened to be picking something up with my dad at the mall.  She saw a big sale rack.  She tried on a few and the one she bought, my dad actually liked on her!  He's not a big complimenter, so it must be great on her!  I've seen it on the hanger and it's a beautiful basic tank dress with a lace jacket.

I second looking at Nordstrom, they have beautiful gowns there as well.  I would try Macys.com too.  The wedding section on their website can be hard to find, but just search for wedding and it will come up.

It stinks she can't find something that she looks great in yet, but she will find her dress/pant suit!
  • Thanks for the advice ladies!  My mom is a little bigger & has had some surgeries that made her self concious so shopping for her period is a challenge....throw in the fact that it's her only daughter's wedding & it makes it that much harder.  I want her to feel comfortable & look beautiful (not that she wouldn't in a paper sack but I doubt that would happen)

  • This is the dress that my mom bought to wear to the wedding: clicky

We liked it because she felt comfy in it, and it didn't age her.

  • Ohh..this is a good thread! My mom has had a hard time as well. She's a little overweight and very self conscious. She really doesn't want something floor length because she's worried she'll get too hot, yet she needs something with at least short sleeves because she hates her arms. I'll definitely check out some of your guys' suggestions. Thanks!
