Flowers?

So we're getting really close! I haven't put down a deposit yet for a florist & I know I need to if I'm going to do it.  I originally wanted all white calla lilies with blue delphinium accents for me & the bridesmaids with the groom & groomsmen having calla boutonnieres.  Parents to be white roses.  I'm trying to cut back as we're really running out of money & time.  So I called to ask them to change everyone but me, groom & parents flowers to just orange roses (my colors are Royal Blue & Orange)  to see if that would cut the cost.  Hardly!!  Only took it down by $45!!  So instead I'm thinking of going the day before the wedding to local stores & buying assorted bouquets & making our own stuff.  Is this a horrible idea??  Is anyone else making their own bouquets?

If you go the DIY route I would definitely do a practice run to make sure everything comes out how you want it.  Also make sure if there are certain flowers you want that you have them ordered - going the day before and just getting what's available can be risky!

  • My mom's friend did that for her wedding, she bought flowers at the grocery store and made her own centerpieces.  It really didn't save her any money in the end, and took up a ton of time the week of the wedding.

I guess it can work out if you have a wholesale flower place in your area, but it didn't save any money by getting the flowers from the supermarket floral section.

Can you talk to your florist about what flowers would work for your budget?  I love peonies, but they're out of season in October...I talked to my florist about cost effective alternatives, and he was great about giving me suggestions that were more budget friendly.

  • I agree with PP, talk to the florist about what will be the most cost effective! I've heard a lot of times that trying to assemble your own flowers is a lot of work. If you're going to do it yourself, definitely go to the wholesale place, buying them from the grocery store or anywhere like that won't cut costs. You will be a lot more stressed though, and there's no guarantee as to what flowers will be available, so you might not get anything you're happy with.

  • The flowers at the supermarket can be a bit risky.  You don't know how old they are by the time you take them home and they may start wilting on you.  Look into some of the online wholesale sites - fiftywflowers, wholeblossoms, samsclub even.  They have great pricing and you will save a ton of money going through them.

I do wedding flowers on the side but I was really hoping I could find someone to do our flowers so that I wouldn't have to worry about it.  I went to the least expensive florist in my area and she qouted me $2600.  I'm going to pay $600 for all of my flowers.  That's how much they mark up the flowers.  Needless to say, I will be doing my own flowers.

If you have any other questions, PM me and I'll try to help as much as possible.

  • If you have a specialty food store (sort of like a Whole Foods, I'm not sure what's available by you) try their floral dept. We got quoted all the flowers for $750 when regular florists were charging at least double.
  • You know I honestly never thought of getting quotes from the markets I'd be buying the flowers from, on them doing the flowers.... hmmm....

  • We are using an online store (bunchesdirect.com) for some of our flowers. I am not trusting myself to make boutonnieres but our florist charged more than I really wanted to pay.
