Forest fall falling foliage venue? Any state

Hi, we are trying to find a venue for an outdoor wedding in the middle of the forest, or at least surrounded by trees. We are planing to have the wedding in October, ant want to have that amazing orange foliage around us. We want the reception to be outdoors too.
It doesn't matter so much where it is, we can travel. But would be amazing to have it near NYC, or southern california for family sake.
Thank you.

Re: Forest fall falling foliage venue? Any state

  • Foliage depends on the weather for the year, so it will be a little bit of guess to hit peak season anywhere.  Have you looked at the Poconos?

I'm not sure if Southern California would really have fall foliage... Can a local help me out?

  • Wiscisbliss's response is a good one. When the leaves change depends on how the prior winter, spring & summer were. October is very late for any fall foiliage in areas north of Virginia. I'd probably google something like "fall foiliage maps and times" and see what you get. I'm in approximately the same foiliage time as NY or New England, and all the leaves have pretty much changed, even blown off, by late October.........hard to say, again, because it can vary from year to year by 2 weeks either way.

  • I think between NY or SoCal you will definitely have better luck with color in NY.

If you are trying to get near 1 of those 2 places, MI is really not ideal location-wise but does have beautiful colors and rivers/lakes.  At least in the lower half of the Lower Penninsula I would say the height of the fall color the last 2 years has "on average" been around the middle of October. I've scheduled an outdoor band concert & my E-pics on that premise and it worked very well.

Once you pick a state you can try local boards for more specific ideas as far as venues go. Good luck!

  • I'd try the Finger Lakes region in September or early October, it's gorgeous. There are tons of wineries if you're into that at all.
  • Northern Arizona has great fall colors. The Grand Canyon, perhaps?

  •  Michigan has BEAUTIFUL fall colors!! I've grown up here my whole life and October would be stunning! Northern Michigan is even better, really the whole state great that time of year!
  • Hi! We're looking to do a similar thing. My fiance and I live in Maine and the foliage here is gorgeous. If you like the ocean, you can even pair the fall foliage with the ocean horizons and beach. Anyways, we're probably going to aim for September for our wedding because it will be warm enough for an outdoor wedding and should be reaching peak foliage by the end of September/beginning of October.

I have been looking at different state parks and gardens to have the ceremony and reception, of which there are plenty in Maine.

    Good luck!
  • Ooh, also, if I had the finances, this is where I would want my wedding. However, you mentioned you can travel so perhaps you'd like to check out this glass chapel:

It's beautiful, you're inside but you feel as though you're outside in the woods because of all the glass.
  • Niagara Falls - Gorgeous in the Fall and the State Park is there -

  • I've lived all over California for my whole life, and as far as I'm aware, the only place here that gets the change of fall colors is in the Eastern Seirras (think near Yositmite) but then you majorly risk road closures due to snow. My partner is from New Hampsire and he says there are crazy colors there in the fall. I'd look into there, Vermont on any of those northern East Coast states.

  • Michigan is gorgeous for fall colors, but a bit unpredictable in weather. It can snow around halloween depending on where you are.

Oregon is heaven for woodsy, beautiful trees. You can find the glow of orange leaves if you find the right areas.

I would suggest either of these two states :)
