Big Island wedding next year

Hi ladies,

I just started planning a destination wedding on the Big Island next year.  We're doing a scouting trip in 2 weeks, but right now I'm thinking Honualai (Sullivan Estate), Paradise Gourmet Catering and hiring Pacific Coast Host to do at least the day of coordination.

I'm interested in a few of the resorts as well, but they all seem to require the purchase of a wedding package which appear to me to be overpriced and padded with unnecessary stuff... Somehow, I don't see us getting much post-wedding use out of etched champagne flutes!

Opinions and ideas would be great!

Welcome to the board - I can't help out with the Big Island at all, but it's always great to see more brides from there!

Welcome to the board. I am also a Big Island bride getting married in Kona. My FI is born and raised there, but we live in Vegas now so I am also planning from afar. Sullivan Estate is very beautiful and in a nice location. I have heard Paradise Catering is very good, we looked at them and they came highly recommended. It is run by the same people who own Huggos Resturant, which has good food. We are planning our ceremony and reception at the Royal Kona Resort, which offer ala carte services that are reasonable. Many of the resorts have ala carte, you just have to ask for the prices. Enjoy your scouting trip and congratulations!

We just got married on the Big Island in Hilo last week on March 10th!  I had such a difficult time finding vendors, etc - so much info for Kona and very little for the east side of the island.  We too considered a wedding package - but also discovered it to be over priced and lacking in quality & content.  After much searching and emailing we finally pulled it all together on our own.  It was amazing!!  And I HAVE to share info!!  If looking for a photographer on the Big Island contact Jim Dierking - he will travel to any of the islands - but has no travel fee for any location on the island of Hawaii.  You can visit his website at www.jimdierkingweddings.com

He was super to work with and we can't recommend him highly enough!!  I have florist and other places, etc to recommend too - but all would probably be too far away from where you are holding your ceremony.  Best of luck with all the planning!

    Hi
We just returned from the Big Island and drove around Puako. The concern I would have is your guests driving back at night, its down a long back road off the highway. Its close to Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea resort areas but both are pretty pricey. We have rented condos a few times in the Mauna Lani resort complex which is much more reasonable than the hotels. Check out vrbo.com for condos in the area and homes for rent in Puako.

Hi LSOrchid2011! I am very curious as to what you ended up doing. I also looked at the Sullivan Estate and am now considering the Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea. I didn't originally want a resort wedding but it is actually quite hard to find a good private residence that will allow a wedding. Would love to hear about what you learned and where you landed!!!
