What style are you going for?
What general area are you wanting to stay around?
What would be your price range?
How many people are you wanting the venue to hold?
Do you want indoor or outdoor?

All of these questions will help the ladies to be able to give you better suggestions :)

we are doing a military wedding. general area of nc. nothing really in particular. pricing N/A parents insist on paying for it.. im an only child so needless to say its a no holds bar on pricing. we arent looking at any more than 120 guest. though i highly doubt it will even be that many because it is out of state for near all of our guest. and either indoor or outdoor. i love both and given the time of year we all know that weather can be rather bi polar

Well, if you are interested in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area there are several lovely locations to choose from. Most country clubs require membership or a sponsor but The Renissance Hotel in Raleigh is lovely and very formal. In Durham there is the Washington Duke Inn which is a beautiful hotel on a golf course right near Duke Chapel. In Chapel Hill I would suggest The Carolina Inn, it's right near UNC-Ch and has beautiful architecural details.

All of these venus have a variety of room sizes and have catering options. They lend themselves toward formal weddings. The Renissance and The Washington Duke have lovely rooms your OOT guests could stay in (you could reserve a block).

If money is no object, The Pavilions at the Angus Barn in Raleigh is a great venue.

I am with the other ladies. I can not really give you any input if you do not narrow down the search. If you want to do a beachy kind of thing then there are a lot of options.
Can you tell us where he is stationed?
If he is stationed in Jacksonville, Fayetteville, Cherry Point, Goldsboro then maybe that will make a difference.....

Hell, if money is no object then Biltmore is a great venue. Or Chinqua Penn.

I just don't understand what being an only child has to do with the budget, nor why it's "needless to say".

I definitely agree with pps. It is a naive to just say money is no object and that you can do anywhere in NC except for Charlotte. Maybe you haven't done a lot of research into the really wide variety of weddings, styles and budgets that you could have in NC. You can do something in budget from $5,000 or $100,000+++.

We need more specific information about what you want/need to be helpful.

I'm going to forewarn I don't want this to come off in a rude way, but just because you're an only child doesn't mean money limits don't matter. I'm sure there's some budget your parents are thinking of and honestly you shouldn't rely on that money unless you actually see it. Many times we've seen brides come here saying their parents are paying and then they never pay up.

I'd first talk to your parents and see what range they're thinking and then go from there.

Also, NC is HUGE so you've got to be more specific. If you want suggestions, we'll give you that. However I think it's unfair to assume that the ladies here know everything about NC and can throw you all of their hard work in research on the premise that you're wanting the 'general Nc area'.

Do some research and figure out the area you're thinking. At that point, it'll be easier to give suggestions.

Again, I don't mean this in a rude way. Good luck and happy planning!

[QUOTE]thank you for all the help already! he is statoined in Cherry point but probably trnasfering units to Lejuene. i will certainly have to check out Wilmington! we have only been together for 6 months, but he has been my best friend for the past 3 years.. we were in MCT (feild training) together lol. he wants to do a military wedding so the colors are going to be the standard of blue, red, and accents of white (that silly man wants to wear his blues but that is his decision) the wedding isnt untill march of 2013 but that is because we are going to do a court house wedding when he comes home. we dont want our parents paying for our wedding.

I don't want to sound creepy, but it's not web-smart to have your name in your sn. You can create a new log in for the boards and still use this one for planning if you've got a bunch of stuff saved already.

Sorry for any misscomunication. in terms of location i have narrowed it down to like Durham, and or Raleigh, the reason i didnt ask for info regarding Charlotte is because ive been there a number of times for friends weddings and what have you and to be quite honest i would rather a less city feel. regarding price. i didnt mean to come across as full of myself FI and i wanted to pay for our wedding but after many discussions (nice way of putting that) with my parents they just arent going to have that they are insisting upon paying for the wedding no matter what i say to them, they were the ones who told me that pricing wasnt an issue. but after much consideration to the topic i would like to keep it around 12,000-15,000. we are having a small wedding.. nothing more than like 80 people. so i am truly sorry for any inconvinience reagarding the initial post. any how, if anyone could give other suggestions for more of a rural area for our wedding.

again i truly do appologize for any inconvieniance

Oh, and regarding to where he is stationed, he is stationed in Cherry Point, but is transfering to Lejuene. again, i feel the need to appologize for how i came across with things, it truly wasn't my intention. The photographer who is going to shoot our wedding is in Charlotte, but she travels, but again, any suggestions for a more country feel in terms of venues would be GREATLY appreciated.

Psh, no inconvienance. It's just tough to answer questions with nothing to go on. There are thousands of options in NC, even if you exclude the Charlotte area. And with no budget to work with, our minds race.

Now that you have a top budget number in mind, it's time to figure out how all that should be broken down. I found the budgeter over on wedding wire more helpful than the knot one. You can enter the total budget, number of guests and numbers for the wedding party and it will give you a starting point of how the budet could be applied. You can then customize based on what you know. For example, I deleted the "videographer" line item and moved that money to photography, because I knew we wouldn't have a video.

Once you've got a handle on how much to spend on a location and catering (could be both in one depending on the location) you'll be able to start looking for a venue. We'll be glad to help.

It's great that you're already considering the guest list size. It's startling how many people pick a venue and then realize it can't hold as many people as they want to invite. It's also surprising how many people think they have a date picked then realize they can't find a venue.

OP, no need to appologize so much. It's ok. It's just that if we're going to give you advice, we need more input on your side as to what you're wanting.

I think Mary (Pirate) said it really well.

Good luck planning!!

I know you said you decided on Durham/Raliegh. But I really must suggest Asheville. Not city-like, and gorgeous weather. Check out Biltmore or the Crest Center.

(Also, I am an only child and my family can only afford to help ~$3000.)

i knew from the get go i didnt want any more than 120 people TOPS at my wedding, (hoping to keep it around 80) and i will certainly check out Asheville, i know how financing can be with things like this, apparently my parents started putting money aside from my wedding years ago, though i always doubted i would actually get married, i will certainly have to check out wedding wire as well. again thank you for your imput! it is certainly helping to make this a little less stressful Smile

You should take a look at the Blowing Rock area. I am attending a wedding show in the area on November 18th-20th. It is a beautiful, but little know section of North Carolina. Check out http://www.weddingshowofthencmtns.com
