Beach wedding - What are you doing for an Arbor?

For those of you getting married on the beach, what are you doing for an arbor?  Are you having one?  If you are, are you renting it and from where?

We had a bamboo trio set up with chiffon and flowers at the posts.  I think it looks really pretty in our pictures and defined/framed our space nicely.  Our florist set it up for us.

My FI is building one similar to teach's above from bamboo & twine. Then we will drape it with fabric, ribbons and shells.

Funny that you are talking about a bamboo one.  OBX mentioned that the bamboo that a friend used & was lending to her was pretty skinny and thought something bigger would look better.  I told this to her 2nd dad and he said "No problem.  We will just cut some bamboo, dry it and make one any way she wants it."  He is so good to her.

So, now we need to find a bamboo grove around here that the owner will allow us to "prune" a few trees.  We are thinking about 3" diameter and 8' tall so it will go in the sand a ways.  I will let you know the outcome!

Boo- We have plenty of "wild" bamboo growing in our neighborhood so we have plenty to choose from! I'd love to see the final product when you're done with it.

Seriously?  Bamboo on the east coast?

We just cut some bamboo yesterday! A friend found some in the city! (Richmond). We are also making something very similar to what Sarah is describing.  Hopefully it will dry out and turn brown quickly.

Boderboo- I'd just post something on facebook or ask your friends. Thats what we did, and got some free bamboo in an alley!

RussoWill, where are you in R?  I work at VCU.  Did you find some big ones?

Yeah, hubby knows some folks with way too much bambo.  It is so invasive here, Maria.

Check out this video on drying it.  Sounds pretty straight forward.

Good luck to all.  BTW, we will be passing these along to some one I am sure.

Thanks for the ideas ladies.  I have been leaning towards the bamboo, but was hesitant to rent one for $175.  I then thought about buying bamboo, but couldn't really find any bamboo that I could buy and ship and figure out what to do with for under that cost.

So...If anyone wants to sell/rent their arbor, I'd be interested in buying/renting.

Or...if someone wants to sell me some bamboo, I'd be interested in buying.

They don't make bamboo out here in missouri :)

And I'm going to look into speaking with my florist.  Hadn't even thought about that!

    Wow, $175 sounds so high.

The more I think about it, I believe we need to start a rental or pass it on business.  It seems to have already started to some degree.  Wonder what others think?

A family friend of my Fiancee's is providing one for us.  I was going to rent it from Ocean Atlantic Rentals (where we're getting all our other rentals) but this is saving us $100. I can ask her if she's interested in renting out - I"m sure she can do it for so much less than the rental companies, and she even has white fabric and shells to put on it for you (and is helping us set it up the day of).   It's like the pic in Ms Teach's response.   I can ask her and let you know!  She's super nice and I loved meeting her :-)

I wanted to do this, but shipping and transporting is my issue.  My father's car is beyond full.  The rentals on this kind of stuff is too much.  It adds up fast.  I thought I'd go sans decoration or pick up some tiki torches and throw some raffia and shells on them when I got into town.  Does anyone local have an arbor available for this Sunday?

boderboo-  I live downtown at 2nd and Cary.  And I went to VCU- thats where FI and I met!  The area we found had a bunch of little ones, but we cut 6 that were about 3" diameter and close to 12ft long. It was an interesting ride home!

My future inlaws live in Duck, so if someone wants our bamboo after Sept 17, we can leave it with them. I'm sure that won't be a problem.

BOO....if you find some bamboo and end up making your own "arbor"...I would be very interested in purchasing from you afterwards. We will actually be getting into the OBX on Sat the 17th, the day before you all leave I believe. Keep me posted on what you come up with please.

LOVE that idea Boo! Maybe you could create a website. I bet tons of brides would be interested. Especially Beach Brides.

@ Khroy---MORE than happy to sell them to you once we are finished and the timing is perfect.

@ Jlbeucke---Khroy is right after us and we will sell to her....since you are in Oct., maybe the 2 of you can work something out.

Will keep you posted on the details ladies :)

Ohhhh and we are hanging 1-2 inch wide pieces of ribbon in teal & tangerine that will simply blow in the wind and will also be hanging the white starfish across the top.

Mpar- I'll ask the woman who's doing ours if it's ready that soon, and available to rent out.  I'm sure she'd be willing to do it for a fraction of the other rental places if she's in town and it's ready (she cuts the bamboo from her yard too- I had no idea bamboo grew on the East Coast either!!)
