Question about White Gold

Hi guys - this is my first post! I wasn't sure where to ask this so I figured I would put it here.

I've been engaged for a month now and I've had the ring sized and it looks great! I've been looking online for ways to help 'maintain' it so that it will continue to look great. However, all I've found is conflicting information, so I thought I would ask here.

The ring is white gold - which I wanted. I've read where some people say that white gold will start to turn yellow since it was yellow gold to begin with and that there's 'no such thing as white gold' and so I will need to have something done to it to restore it, and some people say that if it's really white gold then it doesn't need to have anything done because it won't turn yellow. I don't know anything about this, so I was just wondering if someone knew.

Also, I was wondering how often I should get it cleaned? Professionally or in cleaner myself at home? If I buy cleaner to put it in here at home, what kind should I buy? I have no idea about any of this.

I think you are referring to rhodium plating or dipping. Your best bet would be to ask the jewerly store where you or your FI purchased the ring. Our jewelry store told us about once per year for the rhodium dipping. And be advised, this does cost. I know that we get ours for free bc we went with the warranty/insurance plan, but this is something to ask about. Some stores give it free with purchase. Be sure to ask.

As far as the cleaning goes, I would check with your jewelry store on that as well. I have to take my rings in every 6 months for the prongs/setting to be checked and they clean it as well. That usually does the trick for me. But before you use any jewelry cleaner not recommended or given at the jewelry store where you got the ring, I would check bc you don't want to jeopardize anything voiding the warranty if you do have one or are going to get one.

White gold is gold mixed with (usually nickel) another metal. Then it is Rhodium plated. It makes it the really shiny glowing white white white. Rhodium is in the platinum family. The Rhodium will wear off in about a year & you may need to re-plate. Some people like the look of just the white gold that isn't plated.

Cleaning? Whenever the stone looks dirty/ doesn't shine as much. You can clean with soap & water or windex (no ammonia). Or your jewelry store should do it for free.

I have my white gold rings dipped about every 6 months. The oils on my hand tend to turn the back of them a yellowish color. For in between professional cleanings I use mild soap and a soft toothbrush. It makes the ring look like new.

Everyone else seemed to cover it. But I did work in a jewelry store and seen and learned some very interesting things. Don't wear your ring in chlorine. One woman came in and she was in her hot tub often...well the chlorine ate the metal. I felt bad for her! Also I take my ring off whenever I do dishes, shower, clean, or put on lotion. Dirt can get into the setting and loosen your stone(s), not to mention it will just make it look dirty.

Depending on who your jeweler is most places have a "diamond guarantee" so you might want to find out. If they do then you have to go in (generally every 6 months) to have the ring inspected. They make sure you don't have any loose stones or that the prongs aren't messed up and clean the ring. Now if you do that then say you knock a stone out most places will replace the stone that fell out and you should only have to pay for the setting fee.

You may need to get your ring replated in a year if it's plated but if it's true white gold then just take it to the jewlers when ever it seems dirty to you. They should clean it for free.
