NWR: Best Remedies?

Hi friends,

I work nights this week, so I just woke up about an hour ago and I have a pounding headache, swollen throat, and am so congested. I know I could just google some ideas to feel better and I probably already know a few, it's just difficult to wade outside of the pain and congestion to think of some. Any thoughts or ideas for me? I appreciate your time!

  • Bought it. Thanks. Anything for a sore throat? Something hot and soothing?

  • As a voice teacher, I can say that you really shouldn't take any pain killers for a sore throat.  That's just your body's way of telling you to take it easy with your voice.  I'd recommend a caffeine free tea and a hot shower (or personal steamer-that's what I have)- breathing in steam is great for your throat.  I'd also recommend adding some eucalyptus to the steam- it wards off upper respiratory infection.

  • Thanks, Mel! What do pain killers do to your throat?

  • As soon as I start feeling congested and a sore throat, I start downing green tea. It's all I drink until i feel better. The last time I felt a cold coming it lasted less than 2 days which I believe was because of the green tea (I'm usually sick for 1-2 weeks when my sinuses and all get bad).

The only medicine I rely on is Advil Cold & Sinus. It's the only one that makes me feel better when I'm sick.

  • If you have any sinus/nasal congestion, I highly recommend a neti pot or sinus rinse. It really can help you feel better.

Also, for a sore throat, my mom always swears by gargling with warm salt water -- it helps kill bacteria.

And avoid dairy, if you can. It can make any congestion even worse -- your best bet are clear fluids (water, broth, tea, etc.)

<div>Yes to all this.  OP, pain killers give you a false sense of health.  Pain is suppose to be your body's way of telling you to stop doing what you are doing.  In the case of a sore throat, it is telling you to take it easy with your voice.  If you get rid of that pain, you may not take it easy with your voice.  Also, pain killers are quite drying to the vocal cords.  All I know about biology is about the voice lol.  Neti pots are great!</div>

  • I"m a big fan of Icees and popsicles for a sore throat.

I got really sick with an upper respiratory thing last spring, and went to urgent care because my eyes were super red and secreting lots of disgusting stuff, and that doctor said to treat each symptom with something different.  Was the first time I had heard that.  So, he suggested sudafed for the stuffiness, allergy eye drops for the eyes, mucinex for the chest and ibuprofen for the pain.
