Where/How did you meet your FI?

My FI and I are getting married sooner than we had originally anticipated because he is going into the military.. anyways will all this talk about us getting married sooner, I started thinking about the first day we met.

It was only my third day of working at this grocery store and I was still pretty nervous and had no clue what I was doing... I can't believe they let me run that register all by myself... Anyways, he came through my line and he was soo freaking cute I hardly wanted to look him in his big beautiful brown eyes lol but I couldn't help but smile at him and I know I turned beet red when he smiled back! We hardly said two words to eachother, he walked out and I just knew he had a girlfriend and I would never see him again but that didn't keep me from going home and telling my mom about this cute guy coming through my line lol.

A few days later, he came in again and bought a pack of gum and a drink, we still didn't say much. He then started coming in every Sunday, buying only some gum or something. We finally started talking a little. He did this for 3 months before he got the nerve to ask for my phone number. Boy oh boy that was a mess! My best friend was working with me that day and was yelling at me from a couple registers down. When I ignored her, she picked up the phone at the register and called mine to urge me to ask his name (yep I still didn't know his name!)!! He asked me for my phone number, I turned red yet again didn't say anything but was going to write it on his receipt.. He asked again lol and I kind of snapped (between my best friend and him asking me I was all flustered) and said "YES! I am going to write it on the freaking receipt!"

When he left, I felt like I was going to pass out lol! My knees were weak, palms sweaty. I was so excited but nervous. Later that night he called me and we talked for HOURS!! It was the most natural thing ever. I felt like I knew him my whole life! Wow!!! I can't believe that was almost 6yrs ago!!!!

Sorry mine is so long! Anyways, How and where did you meet your FI?

Re: Where/How did you meet your FI?

  • "YES! I am going to write it on the freaking receipt!" - haha!! That's my favorite part. Such a sitcom-esque story, I love it. Mine's not as exciting. In fact, it's pretty dorky. :P

FI and I both attended different colleges, but we both competed for our school's respective speech teams (competitive public speaking, yes there is such a thing). My freshman year, at the national tournament I had made the top 24 in one of the categories I competed in. They break it into quarters, so you only compete against 5 others, and the top 3 from each section advance to semis. Anyways, we were sitting in the hall waiting for our turns, and I got to talking to this boy who'd made it. We found out we were only freshman to have advanced. (FI later told me he was pretty jealous another freshman had made it - he thought he was special, haha.) But we became friends after that round together.

His sophomore year, he didn't compete the second semester because he got really sick, so sadly I didn't see much of him. Honestly, I didn't talk to him that much either. We were facebook friends but we'd only actually seen each other a few times. Junior year, he was back in full force. After a paticularly large tournament that winter, I was going around talking to friends from other schools while waiting for the awards ceremony to start. I noticed future FI (which I never have guessed he'd be) sitting by himself a few rows infront of my team, and was excited to catch up. We were both pretty out of it after 16 hours of competition so we had the wierdest conversation. Normally the kind that lasts 5 minutes until one of you awkwardly excuses themself. But for some reason we just kept going. As awards started, we promised to keep in touch more on facebook.

The rest is pretty much history. The very next night we both found each other on facebook chat and spent hours talking to each other. This went on for a couple months, every night. We were both shocked to learn how similiar we were - we're pretty much the same person. After the first few weeks, it was really evident we both had a thing for each other, but we both were too shy to take the leap. Then on Valentine's Day, he sent me flowers and chocolate - a totaly surprise. He had gotten my address from one of teammates. He didn't formally ask me out then. In fact it was a couple weeks yet before he finally asked me, "So are we just really cute friends with everything in common, or do you think we could be more? Because I would really like that." It was adorable and like so 4th grade, haha. Told you we're super dorky.
  • Aww, kdm, your story is precious! It reminds me of a romantic comedy scene... you know he really didn't give a darn about that gum!

And steph, I love your story too! I was an FBLA nerd in high school, and I pictured many different romantic meetings at conferences and competitions (although none ever happened!)

I met my boyfriend in high school. Oh my goodness I HATED him!  We had math class together my sophomore year, and he was the most immature, annoying, pain in the rear end I've ever met. My friend used to have the biggest crush on him, and I teased her soooo much for her bad taste (ha!)

Anyways, the next year, I saw him walking through the hallway, and I thought "hey, he got kinda cute over the summer", and asked my best guy friend if he was seeing anyone. After I found out that he was single, my "hey, he's kinda cute" turned out to be a full blown crush! (no worries, my friend had forgotten about him and moved on to who is now her fiance) After my guy friend played cupid for a while, my guy and I hit it off amazingly. Obviously, I forgot about how much he annoyed me the year before. We've been high school sweethearts ever since!

  • Thanks guys! Is it bad that I still start to blush whenever I think about it all and how embarrassed I was lol!

Steph- That wasn't that dorky lol it was actually really cute! I love how, it seems like we chased all the guys in the world and when we least expect it, we met someone who we didn't really think anything of and it turns out to be "the one".

Mel- This is sooo something that I could have seen my best friend and I doing! Lol! So cute!!

    Thanks for sharing ladies!

  • I love all the stories, kdm I woulda totally blurted out something like that in that situation, haha!

FI and I met at Officer Basic Course in San Antonio - we were (and still are) in the Army for scholarships to go to med school, so we had to do this 6 week course on "playing Army."

Anyways, there was no room in the barracks for about a week so we were put up in various hotels in San Antonio, in alphabetical order. Since his last name starts with an L and mine with an M, so we were at the same hotel. I got there really early and was  just sitting in this big chair at the hotel chatting with all of the other students from around the country. My new-found friends and I decide to go get a quick lunch while waiting for the hotel to let us go to our rooms.

When we get back my FI was sitting in this big chair and I sorta give him a quick glare - not sure why (haha) - but that quickly melted away when we started talking.  We were pretty much attached at the hip the rest of the time - we even figured out a way to be in the same platoon :)

Me (2nd from left) and FI (3rd from left) and some of my OBC friends learning to clear buildings - I was the door kicker - haha!

It's so true. I sometimes find myself laughing at the improbability of it all. Haha.

I love hearing everyone else's stories though. It's so interesting how different couples come together. We've all got our niches and backstories, and as diverse as they are, there's always that common ground of meeting "the one" in some unexpected way. Keep 'em coming!
  • I love reading everyone's stories! :)

Greg and I met our freshman year in college. We had both been accepted into a special scholarship program and the participants were all going to see an opera together a couple weeks before classes started as a "get to know each other" field trip type thing. My best friend and I were running late and when we got on the bus I sat down next to him. When I saw him I was thinking, "Oh man, he's just going to be awkwardly silent the WHOLE way!" He struck me as one of those shy, awkwardly nerdy types, and to top it off when his hair is cut short (it was) and his face is smooth (it was) he looks like he's about 12 :P

Other than the fact that he IS somewhat endearingly nerdy (math major, haha), I was totally wrong about him! I don't think we stopped talking the whole way there OR back, which was the equivalent of about 2 hours. The funniest part about it is that he isn't really an opera fan in the least; he was talked into going on the field trip by the program coordinator!

  • It was August 25, 2008--halfway through the second week of classes.  I was in American Lit, and had finally found "my" seat.  A guy was sitting in front of me (Anthony).  We both got there earlier than everyone, and usually just read and kept to ourselves.  That day, FI walked in and sat next to Anthony, and they started talking about a class they have together.  I thought he was really cute.  A few minutes later, FI turns around and introduces himself.  I didn't know what to do.  Guys don't talk to me...at least not the cute ones...and I don't talk to guys.  I said hi, said my name, and shook his hand.  (FI remembers me looking like a deer in headlights.)

From then on, we would talk during the few minutes before class started, and on the walk to the parking lot after class.  Then, we started bumping into each other during the day, and talking then.  In the middle of October, our 2nd test in Lit was coming up, and we talked about the 3 of  us(FI, Anthony and me) getting together to study.  FI said he would set it up and talk Anthony about when/where would be best.
Expecting it to be a group of 3, I made cookies.  I get to the computer lab, and it's just FI.  (I found out a few months later that he never contacted Anthony about it...on purpose--Also, FI had been on a blind date earlier that day that did not go well).  We did study for and hour and a half, but then we spent the next two hours talking about our families, hometowns, friends, majors, churches, ex's (exes?).

A month later, my plans for dinner fell through, and FI invited me to join him and his dorm & sister dorm in the dining hall.  I said yes.  Anthony went with us as well.  Someone made a comment about Dark Knight and asked if I had seen it (it was at our Dollar Theatre by this point.)  I admitted that I had not.  They told FI he should take me.  I got home that night and had a fb message from FI saying he had 2 tickets to the Saturday evening show if I wanted to join him.  I did.  Neither of us said the word "date" the entire evening.  After he walked me to my car, he asked if I wanted to get coffee after church the next day.  We got a LOT of coffee in the 2 weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

On Dec 2, he told me he liked me and wanted to pursue a relationship.  We mutually decided it would be best to hold off on making it "official" until after Christmas break.  So, Jan 10 is our "official" anniversary.  Feb 14, 2010, he proposed in the exact same spot where we met in Mrs. Brinkley's ENGL 201 class. :)
  • these stories are great.

i met my fi almost 9 years ago.....

i had just graduated from college and was living in his town for the summer. i was trying out for the olympics, and he owned and ran an "outdoor gear store" in the downtown area.

i had some free time, so i checked out his store to try to get recommendations for trails to run, etc.

we met then, but lost touch for a number of years, and then reconnected when i moved out to utah and he was here for work.

Wow, so you knew each other, you moved away, he also wound up in Utah and you rekindled it? That's crazy!
  • haha I don't remember how I met FI.  We know it was through a mutual friend and most likely at a collegate sporting event- basketball or baseball maybe??? anywhoo I just remember him FB'ing me and then IMing me on AIM asking if I wanted to go to a b-ball game, except I didn't have a ticket.  Well he found me a ticket and bought my dinner (he had a free coupon- romantic huh?).

We didn't date for long that go 'round but we stayed friends, we went to lots of athletic events as friend and he asked me on numerous occasions for advice about his girlfriends.  Then about a yr and a half after we met he was single again and so was I and the rest is history!  so unromantic haha

I am loving all the stories :)

  • FI and I actually met online.  I was in a chat room because my grandmother had recently passed away and I was struggling with sleeping, etc.  He and I started talking and after a few weeks, exchanged phone numbers.  We talked on the phone for four months before I flew out to IN to meet him.  Once we met, we just wanted to be together.  We dated LD for about a year and a half and he moved out to NJ to be with me two years ago.  We just got engaged this past April, so it's definitely been working for us.  I'm glad we met in such an odd way because we were able to focus on communicating with each other and really getting to know each other before we even considered dating.
  • My FI and I are both nerds to the core and we both LOVE LOVE LOVE Harry Potter. Both of us are into Wizard Rock which is a genre of music created around Harry Potter. Back home in California I was always going to shows and making new friends. Some friends and I even went to Chicago for a Potter convention. Well 2 of my good friends I met thru Harry Potter were going to Scotland to study abroad. There was a wizard rock event in London so both of my friends went. My FI lives in Belgium and he heard about the event online and decided to go. He met my friends as well as a bunch of other people who became his friends.

On January 3, 2009 an event from North Carolina was being broadcasted online and so a few of us showed up online to watch and talked in the chat. Turns out that day my group was doing an event too and it was actually at my house and I was setting up while watching the other event. We all were saying where we were from he mentioned Belgium and I said Northern California near San Francisco and he was like, "Do you know Diniah and Christie?" and I told him yes they were 2 of my best friends and Christie was coming to my house that evening. We talked for a while. It wasn't anything romantic because at the moment I was intrested in someone else who worked at the campus coffee shop back at my school. That evening I told my friend I talked to a guy online that she met in London and she remembered him and that was it. Well that evening I also got a text from the guy I was intrested in basically saying he was no longer intrested in me. I was pretty heart broken, but life we went and I went back to school for Spring semester a few days later.

While on that chat my FI and I had exchanged info to beccome facebook friends which everyone in the Potter community does. We chatted a bit there and I had mentioned i had AIM so he downloaded AIM to chat with me and we started chatting every night for me which was the morning before he went to work. Well on facebook he kept mentioning having a crush on someone which I assumed was me...well a couple months later it turns out it wasn't me, but my friend Lauren from Scotland who turned him down. We ended up chatting on AIM on Valentines day because we both didn't have a Valentine. My friends at school convinced me there was no harm in telling him i liked him. He and I were so much alike and had the best chats on AIM.

There was a Harry Potter convention that was going to happen in Boston that May and I was thinking about going. He was for sure going and had a plane ticket and hotel room already. I had learned that the rooms were sold out and so I asked him if he had space in his room for myself and a friend. Turns out he did have space because he had no roommates. The plan was for me and my friend to stay with him and a guy from London. I was excited I was going to meet him and I was a little scared to say I liked him and I finally did on a Thursday evening over facebook. My Friday I had a message from him saying he liked me too and we should take time to talk. Saturday we decided that we should use skype to talk. We ended up talking all day Saturday only breaking to eat and use the restroom which for him was all night long. By the 23rd of February which was the Monday we decided that we would only talk to one another in a romantic way because we really liked each other. That was say is when we started dating.

We talked for those months all the time every day until May when it was time for the con. My friend and I flew to Boston and he met us in the hotel lobby and right away he gave me a huge hug and there was something about that moment. It was the first time we were physically togeether and it was a beautiful thing. I felt right at home there were no nerves and it was like I was with my best friend I had known for years. About 30 minutes later up in the hotel room my friend and went into the bathroom and it was just he and I. We had brought gifts for one another we exchanged them and thats when we had our first kiss. Later that afternoon we went on an actual date in the Boston Gardens and it was so wonderful. We spent every moment together and leaving was the hardest and I cried for hours.

When I get home we continued what we had and now we are engaged and we try to get together every 3 months. Being LD is hard. I've lived with him for months at a time and its always like I'm with my best friend....well tht was long...haha.

  • We met in high school through a mutual friend. I had known about him before we met. My friends and I used to see him around wearing a long black trench coat and long hair that was always in his face. We always joked around that if anyone blew up the school, it would be him. If anyone had told me that was the guy I'd be marrying I would have laughed in their face.

Anyway, we met and hung out after lunch a few times, but that was really it. Fast forward to 5 years later and we meet again at a mutual friend's party. He looked very different from how he had looked in high school and I didn't recognize him. We were attracted to each other, but both with other people so it was out of the question. But we did become friends, and during that time he broke up with the girl he was dating--and I did too. The day I broke up with my boyfriend he called and asked me out. We became "official" a few weeks later and four years later here we are!

Crazy how things turn out, but I just love him!

I love that this worked out so well for you. I hate that stigma surrounding online dating and chat rooms and such. Granted, you have to be careful and whatnot, but that doesn't mean you can't find "the one" there, you know? And I love what you said about learning to communicate before you even considered a relationship. The ability to communicate well with each other is so critical, yet often overlooked. Good for you!

  • Being the students board, I guess this one is good.

My FI & I met our freshman year of college in a drawing class we both took.  We went on a field trip to a local conservatory to draw, and he just kind of talked to me and followed me and drew whatever I drew.  He was nice, so we went running together the next day.  Then we ate dinner together, played some board games, watched a movie, and spent the rest of that day together.  And we have literally been together ever since.

It was rough though because our classmates were terrible and asked things like "what happens when you two break up and are still in the same classes."  Showed them ^_^

When I was a freshman in high school, I was dating a younger boy who lived about 30 minutes away. We'd been together about a year, and I was head over heels for him. He'd been cheating on me with several different girls, and I just kept taking him back, even though I knew he'd continue to verbally and emotionally abuse me as he had before.

I was really self conscious and had myself convinced no one would ever love me, I'd be alone forever, etc. etc., especially since this boy ruined the friendship I had with a girl for over 7 years before I met him.
Well, I walked through the halls of a new high school in the middle of a town with the population of about 2-3,000. I was the new girl, in an awkward stage (I wore only black shirts and heavy eyeliner, dark everything else, thanks to the former boyfriend).

I saw this boy who I thought was the cutest thing that ever walked the planet. The instant I SAW him, I had a crush. The way he looked at his girlfriend and the way he always had his arm around her in halls and at pep rallies was the way I had always wanted a boy to look at me- but he had a girlfriend and I didn't even know his name!

I ended up meeting ONE girl who I befriended on the first day, Emily, (I was shy, and she is VERY vocal). The second semester came around, and the girl and I had ONE class together- our first, because we met in the cafeteria- GYM. We were both SUPER unathletic, and just sat on the bleachers talking every day. By this time, I was dating someone else. His name was Jacob, and he was definitely a rebound guy. He was super sweet and always wanted to be around me, but I just didn't care about him like I knew I should.

One day, I noticed the SUPER CUTE boy I'd had my eye on all year was in MY gym class. We ended up talking every day, because he's a very vocal person, unlike I was at the time. We had both developed crushes by this time, and he turned to me one day with a sad look and said "Do you date Jacob?". I replied "Yeaah..." pretty depressed, because I was planning on breaking up with him in the next few days. Then, he hit me with a shocker: "That's my best friend."
He ended up dating a close friend of mine for a few weeks after we found that out, but it didn't work out.

I just KNEW he'd never date me after that. I broke up with Jacob, and kept talking to the FI on a daily basis, during gym and after school on MySpace. Emily ended up telling FI in their speech class that I liked him, without letting me know.

Suddenly, FI started appearing at our lunch table every day. "I know something you don't know!" he always yelled when he sat down, until finally Emily blurted out what it was: "He likes you, too. I gave him your number, he's going to call you soon, but he doesn't want Jacob to find out."

Well, we dated secretly starting that April, right before school ended. Jacob found out that summer, and stopped talking to him. But, FI didn't care.
I know it's not very traditional, but the FI movedin with my parents and me after six months of dating (he came from a bad background, ina bad neighborhood that my dad wanted to get him away from, because he instantly loved him), and we've been together since.

It's not a very good story for the rest of the people involved, but it was for us. Teenagers are stupid, but I'm glad we made those stupid choices. I got the guy I dreamed about and never knew the name of after just six months, and he's the sweetest, funniest, most caring person I've ever met. The girl he was dating when I developed my crush was completely stupid for leaving that boy, but I'm glad she did! :)

Sorry so long! Lol. I don't get to brag too often, most people already know the story. (:

  • Ha! I love all these stories. They're all so sweet.

My fiance and I actually met on MySpace. He was about to go into surgery and then be on bedrest for something like 4 months, so he was randomly browsing people to talk to during that time. Well, he saw my picture and thought I was cute, so he friended me. Well, I thought he was a creeper and told him that I didn't add people I didn't know, so he asked if we could message eachother for a while.
So, we started messaging each other... and then IMing... and then calling and texting. After 9 months of this, he decided to come meet me. Oh, did I mention he works in DC while I go to school in WI? Yeah. So, he drove up here with a few of his friends and i brought along one of my friends (just in case the other was an ax murderer) and we hung out for the weekend and then he went home to DC.
We kept calling each other and what not. Then, a month later (actually 3am on my birthday) he called and told me that I should be his girlfriend. We've been together ever since (a little over 3 years). He still works in DC and I'm finishing school in WI. I'll be moving out there for my internship in a year and then we'll be getting married a year after that.
  • It's amazing how you meet people.  Reading all these stories, I'm sure most of us didn't wake up those days thinking "today I'm going to meet the love of my life..."  And yet, here we all are planning our weddings.  It's awesome!

I was actually super good friends with FI's younger brother in high school.  His younger brother (YB) started dating my best friend at the time, and we had a large group of mutual friends.  YB invited me and all our friends out to eat one day to celebrate his 19th birthday, and his family (including future FI) were there as well.  I ended up sitting next to FI at the table and we starting chatting.  I found out that YB's birthday had actually been the day before, and it was really my FI's 21st birthday (May 30, 2006) because their birthdays are only one day different, even though they're two years apart.  When I found out it was actually his birthday, I just blurted out "Well where are all of your friends?"  (Looking back, I guess that was kind of harsh).  To make up for it, I told him I'd be his friend for the small fee of $1.  So he bought my friendship for a dollar.  :o)  We became best friends over the next few months, and by March '07, we made it official.  It's been nearly three and a half years since we started dating, and it seems like not so long ago.

  • We met on campus. Actually I first went to a school a few hours away, but had transferred to the college in my hometown. My mom was actually his supervisor at a library on campus. She kept saying, "You have to meet my student worker! He's so nice! Blah, Blah, Blah." And I'm like, "Gross Mom!" If your mom likes him, he must be lame.Undecided I ran into him a couple of times at his work, but I barely even registered him. I started working at a different library on campus, and one summer, he worked there when we needed extra employees. When I first actually met him, I thought he was soo cute. But he's super shy, so I thought he didn't like me. My co-worker (who's now my bridesmaid) and I threw a party for all our co-workers. Katie was just like, "We will get him drunk and then you can hit on him!" Unfortunately, I was the one that got drunk and kind of threw myself at him! Embarassed It all worked out in the end though. We went on a day the next day and have been inseparable ever since!

My fiance and I have known each other since we were 11 yrs old. I moved into the neighborhood and he said that the first time he saw me, he instantly knew that he was going to marry me one day.

We went to the same elementary and junior high schools, he had a HUGE crush on me but I always just saw him as a friend and wasn't into him. All throughout high school he kept in touch with me(even though both of us were in relationships with other people).

It wasn't until a few years ago that we started getting really close. I found him to be a great friend and it turned into something more. We've been together ever since. I guess he was right about marrying me one day.

  • We met at an arcade, but didn't really notice each other right away because both of us were in relationships. He started to work at the same place that my then boyfriend worked at, another local teen hangout. It wasn't until after we were both single, and he cut off his long hair, that I developed a crush on him. I started hanging out at places I knew he would be (like the arcade), flirting with him and becoming friends with his friends. I even made up a lame excuse to get my number into his phone. We started calling each other and hanging out in groups with friends. We had a lot of chemistry and were flirting but still just friends. One night, our group was supposed to meet us somewhere but nobody showed up, so we went back to his place to watch some movies, just the two of us. That was when he finally kissed me and the rest is history!
