Cake!

Need some cake recommendations - contact info would be good, too!  We're expecting 150-175 people, no fondant, nothing too outrageous decoration-wise.  Is it better to do a small main cake w/ sheet cake on the side?

Also, I have no idea about booking a baker - do you taste from several different bakers before booking one, or book one then taste a few different cakes from them to decide which flavors you want?

TIA ladies!

    mmmmm... cake...

opps sorry, I got a little distracted :-)

anyway, it doesn't necessarily save you a ton of cash to do a small cake with sheet cakes.  some places charge less for sheet cake, but at one place I saw it only saved you around $0.25 a slice.  and for $40 more, I say go for the big cake!   best bet would be to call around for pricing and then determine if it's worth it.

we are going with anita kline, and it was around $500 for 175 people.  her prices for regular cake start at $2.50 and sheet cake is $1.75.  her contact info is abcj22@gmail.com if you would like to check her out.

as for the tasting, the first one we actually tasted was anita's and stopped after that, but you don't have to book someplace just because you went for a tasting!  if you aren't satisfied, keep looking!

Anita Kline.....love her! I'm doing a three tier cake, then sheet cakes.  She doesn't have a website, but she'll have loads of pics to look at when you go for a cake tasting. Her email: abcj22@gmail.com

I also met with Cindy from Enticing Icings, her cake was good, but we fell in love with Anita. www.enticingicings.com

Here are two others that I considered (and I think I got all of these names from recs on the board):
-Short North Piece of Cake: http://www.shortnorthpieceofcake.com/index.html
    -Alice's Piece of Cake: http://www.alicespieceofcake.com/

As for booking a baker, my experience was that you met with bakers, then made a decision as to whether you wanted to book them. When we met with Anita Kline, she let us pick out a bunch of flavors and fillings. Then, we discussed what matched well, what we were thinking, etc.  When I met with Cindy from Enticing Icings, she had two 6ish inch cakes, chocolate and vanilla, with some fillings. She said that the cakes were basically what she had made for that past weekend's cakes. I would have liked the opportunity to pick the flavors, but the cakes were yummy, as were the fillings. Good luck.

Definitely Anita Kline. We are right around 175 people as well and our cake was around 450-500.

    Her cake is amazing!!!!

Beckmeister, I sent you a PM with a bunch of info about wedding cake bakers in Cbus. Its kind of an overwhelming list, so we narrowed it down by tasting a bunch of ppl's cakes at the Columbus Bride Show, which was super helpful, then scheduled tastings with some of them. So far we have had 3 (Cakes by Cecile, Short North Piece of Cake, and Giant Eagle) and have one set up with Anita Kline in two weeks. We loved Cakes by Cecile, but she was a little pricier than we can afford ($3.65/serving + delivery/setup of $70) so we are hoping Anita will be as fabulous and affordable as everyone tells us she is.

As for the tastings, one place had three different cakes ready for us to try, and the other two asked us which flavors we were interested in.

We're using Michelle Sauer (Sauer Cakes).  We loved her cakes as soon as we tasted them!  We tasted a few different cake vendors before choosing Michelle (she was the last one we tasted).  With Michelle, she had multiple cupcakes in about 4-5 different flavors and multiple fillings she has so that you can mix and match flavorings to get an idea.  Her pricing is $4.00/slice but that includes any flavor and filling, buttercream frosting, free delivery (within 20 miles) and setup, different flavors per tier, free cake stand, and a 1st anniversary cake.  You can check her out at www.sauercakes.com

We went with Short North Piece of Cake.  We went in for a tasting, we didn't have any specific things in mind so they just made us a plate of their most popular fillings and then white, yellow, and choc. cake.  We booked on the spot.  We did 3 tiers of cake (that served 105) and then you get the top "anniversary" tier as well.  We also did a 1/2 sheet cake that served 48.  When we booked in Spring 2010, it was $3.25/slice for the tier cake, and $1/slice for the sheet cake.  We did a very basic cake, so no extra cost per slice for decoration, and it was about $400.  We went with white cake with almond filling, white cake with raspberry filling, and chocolate cake with hazelnut filling and it was all delicious!  They delivered it right on time and all our guests raved about it.  Hope this helps! :)

We are going with Bella Luna.  I know Anita Kline is highly recomended on this site but she was booked for our date so I couldn't compare.  We absolutely loved a certain flavor that we tried from Bella Luna at a bridal show and even after meeting with 3 others, we went kept coming back to that cake.

I really liked Christina from Bella Luna. However, she was a bit too expensive for our budget. I ended up going with Elegant Icings. I think I met with 3 bakers before deciding.

We're using Short North Piece of Cake too. It was love at first taste when we went and yes, their sheet cakes are still 1.00 per serving. They have the best buttercream and are very reasonably priced.

I third Cindy from Enticing Icings.  She is awesome and great price.  We booked her early (like before thanksgiving).  But she may still have some spaces available.

Thanks for all of the input, ladies!  Sounds like we've got a lot of cake tasting to do - I don't think that's a problem though :)

Anita Kline! Her cake was soo yummy. At our initial meeting, she asked us which cake flavors we wanted to try and she made many different filling options separate from the cake so you can try different combinations together. We picked 2 flavors to serve to everyone at the wedding, and my husband loved a third flavor combination so much I surprised him with a groom's cake from Anita at the rehearsal dinner. I hope I can get her to make a mini cake for our upcoming 1 year anniversary!
