Venues on the cheap

So, the Gahanna Sanctuary may be out...it's pretty outdated. I like it though.

The Everall barn is out, no alcohol.

The Atheneum is probably out...too $$$

Same with the Clocktower.

Hopefully going to see the Arlington swim and racquet club.

Any other suggestions? I just got started, but I already feel discouraged.

My friend got married at the Gahanna Sanctuary. It can be dressed up pretty nicely. There's also a beautiful old/new barn in upper Arlington and prices are very reasonable. We're getting married at Autumn Lakes in Sunbury if you're going for something a little more rustic.

I looked into the Westerville VFW. It was reasonable, and my family is VERY military so that may be an option.

I'll check out the other options you mentioned as well! I know I have time, it's just so frustrating with everything being so expensive!

Also check out The Big Room.  It is about $1000 for the night.

    tall timbers in reynoldsburg! :)

Check the Jessing Center, it's BYOB.  I think the rental fee is about $800.  The exclusive caterer is Mass Appeal, and they're pretty reasonable.

Tall Timbers would be an option if they allowed outside caterers.

That's what is killing me...160 on the invite list (I know some won't come, but who knows) and $20+ for food is too much for our budget.

The fiance wants alcohol, and really, I do to. He is not fond of the Sanctuary...I haven't given up on it.

Arlington Swim and Raquet club does not rent during the summer.

I'm kind of pushing for the VFW because then I could afford the church I want. I am trying sooo hard to stay under 7k! Argh! Thank goodness I started so early!

Freak out session = over. Canceling my appts to tour the atheneum and clocktower. Out of budget = out of mind.

Dad and I got into it yesterday, and I think that's why I'm freaking out today. All I needed was a pep talk from my MOH.

I am very against the athenaeum so I am glad you got rid of that,

We looked at swim and racquet, good for like 150 and it is very pretty

we booked with the big room it is very nice and i really like it, wendy is amazing and there are only a few rules pretty laid back.

We looked at Gahanna Sanctuary and it is just not us, we thought it was too old for us and not a big fan of it.

I just don't have $1000 to drop just on the reception hall...it would have to be both ceremony and reception. My church alone is $500, and I'm on a $7000 budget for everything.

i loved tall itimbers but it was just outside my budget as well.  my budget is $8000! my photographer, cake and rehearsal dinner are NOT included in that price, we are paying for that ourselves. I am having my ceremony/reception at All Occasions just north of delaware. Not sure how far you are wanting to go, but that may be an option.

A few other reasonably priced venues are the Marian Center at Immaculate Conception, the Clintonville Woman's Club, and the YWCA downtown. I'm pretty sure you can bring your own alcohol at all of those, which can help with costs.

My friend tried to work with the YWCA and she had nothing but trouble

I have a feeling that it will be the VFW. It's decent looking, I have time to find decorations. Half of our guests will be coming from Cleveland, and having the church and the reception so close together is a great plus.

If I went with an expensive venue, I couldn't afford St. Pauls which is GORGEOUS.

Why do people seem not to like the athenaeum?
  • edited December 2011
i'm getting married and having my reception at the clock tower! it was actually one of the more reasonable places i went to. we are having a friday wedding to save on costs, you could probably make it happen there.

i didn't like the athenaeum because it looked old and dusty. the one ceremony room was really really pretty, but i wasn't a fan of the reception areas.
It's for sure I'm gonna love you all the way. Frank Sinatra

The Athenaeum is beautiful, but because they do so many weddings there they are very strict and controlling and you have to go through them for everything! Ugly ass chairs? Yeah we can rent you chair covers for $8.50 a piece! You want kids at your wedding?? You have to serve them from the adult buffet starting at $20+ per kid!!! You want to make your own cake??? No you have to have a vendor's license even though Ohio has a food cottage law which enables you to bake and sell items from a home kitchen, not to mention everyone at your wedding willl be family and friends who have, at one point in time in the past 8 years that you've been making them, eaten one of your cakes without getting sick but that doesn't matter because you don't have a vendor's license!!!!!!! Needless to say I'm not one of those who like the Athenaeum anymore as I'm still paying for a cancelled wedding from there from almost 2 years ago!!!!! Sorry to anyone who actually likes them, I don't mean to offend. I would've loved for my wedding to go through, but unfortunately it had to be postponed and the Athenaeum isn't very forgiving.

On a side note, my husband and I were married at Bent Tree Golf Club in Sunbury last Oct and they were simply amazing! A big thanks to bcsgal for posting about them!!!!

  • Not sure if you have found anything yet or how far out of C-bus you want to be but there are some very nice places in Newark.  We are having our reception at the Millersport Lions Club.  Very awesome historic area, large kitchen, no rules and only $350 to rent from 6pm on Friday and all day Saturday.   You can bring any caterer you want and its BYOB.  Also, my caterer is very reasonable and his food is great!!  If you start looking for services outside of C-bus you will find they are cheaper.   My photographer is way cheaper than anyone in C-bus too and their quality is just as nice as anyone else.  They are all day photographers, no time limit, and you get the rights to all phots.  They also will do your engagement pics and rehersal dinner photos all in the same package.
  • Just curious, Im starting my journey of wedding planning. There is a lady at the Valleydale ballroom on sunbury road that was really nice. She said they can do both ceremony and reception there. Maybe you can try her.
