Questions to ask DJ and Florist

Hi all!

We are meeting with a potential DJ tomorrow night that also offers photobooths and uplighting. What questions should we be asking at this meeting?

We are having an in-home consult with a potential florist on Monday evening. Her prices seem great! Again though, what questions should we be asking?

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Re: Questions to ask DJ and Florist

  • I didn't really ask my DJ questions because he is a family friend so I am no help on that.

But with the florist, I knew she was the right one because I had an idea of what I wanted and she was able to transform it into something even more beautiful then I imagined. If you have picked out colors it helps to have a color swatch and lots of pictures. I got a great deal just about 600 for 8 bouquets plus a throw away,4 corsages, 11 boutonnieres, and a pomander ball. All of my bouquets have daisies and alstromerias and mine has hydrangeas as well.

See if there is a delivery fee that can sometimes be high.

  • My DJ was a one-man show so I made sure to ask him what his backup plan is in the event something happens to him (sick, emergency, etc). I also asked questions about the type of equipment he has and if he has backup equipment.

He's doing two setups. A smaller one for my ceremony space and a larger one for the reception space.

We also discussed what time he will arrive (set up) and when I would like music to start.

I asked questions about how he responds when guests are not dancing or if they get a little "out of hand". I also like hearing some stories of "unique" wedding's he's done and how he responded to different things that happened.

  • We haven't met with the florist yet, for the DJ I trusted all the good things my wedding planner said about him. She has used him for several weddings.

They have a really cool website where we can plan out the songs for each part of the ceremony and then we select what type of music we want to hear more of and what we don't want to hear at all during the reception. There is also a place to put in requested songs and dedicate them to guests. For example my grandparents love the song "Brick House" so I will definitely be putting it on there for them! He also explained their back up plans if anything goes wrong and it all sounded good.

I love alstromeria!  That's going to be the primary flower in most of our bouquets.
  • Florist- definetely make sure you know what exactly you are paying for.  Is that the price for the vases and the flowers?  Which flowers are more?  Ask about delivery and set up.  The most important thing with the florist is to know if they "get you".  Do they understand what you want?  Can they take your ideas and make them beautiful?

DJ- I'm a musician who's played weddings before, so I knew what I was looking for.  I actually found our DJ in a Barnes and Nobles meeting with  brides in the cafe.  As they asked questions about songs, I would think of an idea for a song, and then the DJ literally answered the exact songs I was thinking.  This meant to me that we had the same idea of what songs make a good party.  He also understood that there needs to be dance songs from all eras to get everyone dancing- if you only have top 40, probably almost half your guests won't feel comfortable dancing.  You should ask about how he handles volume, what his setup is, does he have back up equipment, and what PPs have mentioned.
