Destination wedding big reception still register??

Im having a destination wedding in mexico. We are only inviting the bridal party and siblings and parents. But when we come home we want to have a big reception with all of our friends and family. Do we still have a bridal registery?

Re: Destination wedding big reception still register??

  • Are you having a bridal shower? You'd need one for that.

I would register, but do NOT put it on any invitations, etc.  Allow word of mouth to spread the word and that way you won't get things you don't want, but you won't seem greedy either.
  • Ah thank you so much.
  • I say very small registry. Some people will want to mark the occasion with a gift. However, bear in mind that in terms of etiquette, the "obligation" to give a gift (I put it in quotes because the social expectation to give a gift is strong, even if it's not technically required) comes with the ceremony invitation, not the reception invite.

In your situation, I would also turn down bridal showers. It's a pretty strict etiquette expectation that a shower invitation means you'll also be invited to the wedding.

  • We had a smalll destination wedding and no big reception at home but still registered because extended family, family friends and friends wanted us to register so they'd know what to get. We had two teeny tiny registries and it worked out great.

<div>Agree with all parts of this...small, unadvertised registry, and decline showers (unless they are just the small group of people invited to the ceremony).  </div>
  • If you're having a 'big' reception no need to keep the registry 'teeny'.

Well, the gift is for the ceremony, and the ceremony is small, so the registry should not be big.  If so many of the reception guests want to get a gift that a small registry is cleand out, OP can always add more things later.

I disagree.  If the majority of the reception guests are not invited to the wedding, it would look very gift grabby to have a huge registry.  The size of the registry should be proportional to the size of the ceremony, not the reception in this case (a DW).
