BM Dresses

The search function isn't working for me, so I apologize if this has been brought up recently.  For those of you who gave or are giving your BMs the option of choosing their own dress...

Are they choosing their own from any store or have you decided on a certain color from a specific shop and then giving them the option of which style they like best?

If you let them choose their own from anywhere what stipulations did you give them, if any?

My specifications were that they had too be from the same designer and the same material and color.

All I gave them was the dark purple color. Me & 2 BMs went to Bridal Co in Denton & they both picked out a floor length chiffon strapless gown made by Alfred Angelo. Then I sent the info to my other 2 BMs and they went to a local Alfred Angelo & tried it on & liked it as well.
I originally wanted everyone in different dresses but they all decided they would like to wear the same one.
It's this one but in a darker more purple-y color (it doesn't show the color right on the website)

I chose a design selection from David's Bridal (there were four different designs to choose from - the difference was mainly in the neckline).  They chose which design, but they were all the same color.

We got the dresses at Alfred Angelo. I gave them the choice of any dress they wanted, and they could choose from two color options. I think it turned out looking great:

I let the girls choose their own dress from DB in champagne satin.

If I had it to do over, I would say go pick out any nice dress you want from any store you want.  I think it looks more chic.  And I hate that my sister is stuck with some long champagne satin dress she'll never wear again.

I tried to get my girls to pick a dress from a regular store, but they didn't think it was wedding-y enough. I had actually found a really cute cotton/jersey dress at NY&Co in the right color for only $40 but they thought it was too casual for BMs.

One of my girls gave me links to the Bill Levkoff dresses, so we decided on a color and material and the girls picked which dress they wanted.

For a wedding that I'll be a BM in August, the bride picked a color, material and length from DB, and we all decide which dress we want to wear.

Stephie - I have a long maroon dress from DB from a wedding this past September and will never wear it again, but I would do anything for the bride :)  I'm sure your sister is the same way.

Oh, I know.  She wore it happily and they looked beautiful.  But I've seen weddings since mine where the girls just picked any black dress they wanted  (which was my second choice) and it always looks great and doesn't scream "Look, I'm a bridesmaid!!"

I think it's ok to scream "Look, I'm a bridesmaid!" Or at least whisper it softly. BMs are special for a reason

Anna - I agree.    I'm a bridesmaids in my cousin wedding next year, and I'd kinda like to be recognized as a bridesmaid even after we are no longer standing in front.   I always thought it was cool.

To answer OP question,  we picked tea length dresses that were primarily black.  They were all idential.   I didn't really mandate that one way or another, but they all really liked them and they can be worn again.   It was (surprisingly) easy peezy.

I told my girls to pick any grey, knee length, chiffon dress from any store. I'm not worried about the color matching. I did buy them matching silk magenta flats, so they will coordinate that way. (But I also told them they could change shoes for the reception if they wanted to!)

Side note: The guys will be wearing any black suit, but we're providing the ties and cufflinks.

I told my girls that it needed to be black, to the knees, and satin. Other then that they could do their thing. I didn't care if they already had the dress or if the had to buy it. I suggested DB because of the discount but didn't say they had to buy from there.

I ended up finding a cute cocktail dress from Lazaro. I really wanted long dresses, but short is more re-wearable. All the girls love the dress so I didn't need to pick out different options.  Then I bought their shoes and jewelry as a gift. (Great sale at White House Black Market!)

Thanks for all the great feedback!  I was leaning more towards letting them choose from any designer, but I wasn't sure if that would cause more issues.  My colors are dark gray and soft blue with touches of pearl.  I think dark gray would be the best color for their dresses.

I told them navy dresses (marine at DB). They like the idea of seperates, so I said yall can have the same bottom, but choose the top that YOU like the most, and YOU feel most comfortable in. So thats what they are doing. We've not gone dress shopping yet though. They may even see a one piece one that they like even better! :)

My BMs are all doing short black dresses from DB in cotton sateen. We photo'ed a couple of the fabrics next to each other in the store, and everyone agreed that the dresses in this fabric looked the nicest. There are about 4 styles to choose from. I think you could go with different designers, but you might want to see the dresses before they order just to make sure it's somewhat cohesive. But I've seen pics of weddings where the BM's were in different shades of gray, and I thought it was really pretty.

I picked 2 styles (with the help of my sister who is my MOH) and the color (Regency) @ DB - and am letting them pick which dress.

We are all going to go together in Jan/Feb to purchase, so if they find something else that matches fabric-wise & somewhat style-wise that comes in the same color, I'll be good with that, too!

My MOH & 2 BMs are all built pretty differently, so want them to be comfortable and feel good - but also have somewhat of a cohesive look.

I let them pick any knee-length chiffon dress in medium to dark blue (cobalt-navy) with substantial straps (not strapless or spaghetti)

In my head it looked really great and i was a little nervous but everyone has picked and the pics of the dresses look awesome next to each other so i am really excited. (the last one is the JrBM.
