Is this normal?!?!?!

I've started looking at makeup/hair artists, and have noticed that many of them have VERY different rates for bridal vs. non bridal services.  On one site the services described were exactly the same, but in the 'bridal pricing' section, it cost $275, but under the 'special events' section, it was $125! WTF?

Is that common? Any idea why?

Re: Is this normal?!?!?!

  • Anytime you add the terms bride and wedding prices tend to go up. Sometimes if you talk to the vendor and tell them how much you like their work but are on a tight budget and noticed their other pricing, they will lower their prices. Doesn't always work, but can be worth it.

For my wedding, my bridesmaids hair and makeup was significantly cheaper than mine (with the same MUA). I thought that was weird, but when it came down to the day, she spent twice as much time on me making sure every little thing was perfect. It totally made sense once I experienced it.
    Just my $.02.

  • My makeup was about $35 more expensive plus $80 for the individual lashes (as opposed to a band) but she spent a lot more time on me and the lashes were worth every penny. I also noticed that while my BMs makeup still looked good at the end of the night mine looked even better.

My hair was the same price as my girls but still took a bit longer to do even so I have less hair than some of them.

  • That all makes a lot of sense, I'm relieved that it sounds like you do get what you pay for, and aren't just being gouged because the word "bride" is stuck on.

Thank you for the responses :)
  • Ditto, PPs.  Also some hair and MUA will include trial runs at no extra charge.  DD's salon charged far more for a bridal updo, but she had 4 trials to be sure she ended up with what she wanted.
  • Ditto PP. Besides time keep in mind that MUA often use diferent products (ie more expensive) on the bride to make sure they photograph well.

  • Yeah, normal. I prepaid for my makeup just to soften the blow. The artist I am using did a wedding I was in before. She treated the bride like a superstar. Everyone who got the make up looked amazing, but the bride was the show-stopper. But I have to say, half the people in the wedding party got the make up, half didn't for monetary reasons. I'm glad I opted for the make up. You could really tell in the pictures compared to how I normally look.
