Have you gone over budget just yet?

Have you gone over your 'pre-planned' wedding budget??

Re: Have you gone over budget just yet?

  • We didn't have an actual set budget, but we did have a number that we were hoping not to go over. As of right now we're slightly over that number, but we upped it so we could hire a live band rather than a DJ. I feel pretty good about where we're at right now. Ask me again closer to the wedding when last minute stuff happens and we end up going over even more, lol. :)
  • Ask me after we get all our RSVPs back!  Our budget accounts for 200 guests, but we invited 265.  So far only 1 "no".  So if we end up with more than 200 guests, yep- over budget.
My photographer was also WAY over budget, but as of now we didn't hire a videographer, so it balanced out.

  • bahahahaha   this makes me laugh, we're at like.... twice our originally planned budget.

it started getting so bad i just quit paying attention.  we have the money to pay for it, and we're not financing any of it and what credit cards we use we pay off every month so i'm not worried about it.

crafting is a hobby of mine, so i've pretty much been spending the same on my wedding crafting stuff as i would spend normally so that makes up for itself.

umm.... and that doesn't include the honeymoon  haha  :-P

<div>This! The last I was keeping a real tight hold of the finances (a couple months ago? Before Christmas?) it seemed like we would be about $1000 over (with vendors/ food/ clothes)... But around then is also when I stopped keeping track of crafting/ decor supplies, so who knows. We've been able to save what we've needed to, though, so whatever... It'll cost what it costs.</div>

This bolded part is pretty much how we are!

We knew what we wanted to spend but we have gone over. BUT we also thought it would be what we paid since then my mom has helped with a few things and then my dad has picked up our largest expense so I see it as we haven't gone over our budget lol. And technically FI and I still have room to go! I also know some last minute things will come up so I'm glad my parents picked up a few of the other bills!

    This.

And the budget we had was completely unrealistic (as we found in the first month or two). We made changes in our daily lives to do what we wanted to do and my dad ended up contributing a lot more than we thought.

um, YES... months ago!  We're still within a reasonable range though and can afford it so it's not a big deal. I'm glad we set a budget in the beginning because it hekped reign in our spending. We stayed close to budget for the big vendors, and mostly went over because of all the little things.

  • Yep.  I too have stopped counting.  I mean, I am keeping track of how much I am going to have to pay (balances for all the vendors), but I stopped adding in the little things that I get here and there.

And my mother keeps adding people to the list!  I have to send out 7 invitations this weekend!!  ‘Oh hi, hairdresser we’ve only met 10 minutes ago, you wanna stay for the wedding after you do our makeup?  OK.’  Really??

  • Yes and no... when I made the budget I planned for the obvious stuff - venue, food, drink, attire, DJ, photog, flowers, rings. I completely didn't think of adding in all the little things that add up very quickly and put us over budget (Stamps, Etsy finds, shower/rehearsal/honeymoon clothes, hair appointments, bathroom baskets, gifts for the BP, etc). Like many others, I stopped counting all that extra stuff as part of the cost. However, a lot more people have been RSVP-ing no than I planned so I actually think we're back to being close to our budget.

  • We had no budget. Just spend it all!  (Just kidding, I'm pretty reasonable).   I could not even tell you how much it's costing though.

  • Amazingly enough.....we are under budget.  And depending on how our final meeting with the venue goes tonight we're hoping even more under the budget as we shot high on the # of guests when we signed our original contract.  So we're about 10 people less than the original contract and at $141/person -- I'm loving it!

  • I am incredibly anal about our budget. I have a spreadsheet (cost, Paid, Owed) and include pretty much everything. Even the $20 I spent on craft supplies the other day. So we are under budget right now. I dont know exact #s for catering yet, but I estimated at more than I expected to attend.
I am paying for the wedding and sore up and down to FI that I would do it for under $10 000. So I plan to do it to show him I can.

We didnt include our wedding bands though ($550 total for both). I didnt think they should count.

I go over the budget everyday!! I'm crazy like that though. Every single cent we have spent. We need to keep it at a specific number so we can afford to do other things after the wedding.  We have been saving for the wedding and Home renos which have been waiting 3 years! My parents are contributing half the cost and they like to see every detail of where the money is being spent. So I basically do up expense reports on a weekly basis and a budget over view.

WIth all the chages it basically doubled in the last 2 weeks. Brutal
  • Yeah we have....mostly because I was naive at the beginning about the cost of food and open bar and I wayyyy underestimated the amount of guests we would end up inviting (I was thinking around 115....we invited 219 lol). So that's the main reason why it's more than I originally thought. There are a couple of other littles things but overall I've done well with the rest of the stuff within a reasonable budget.

  • right now im about $17000 below budget!
  • We also had a very loose budget - I know ballpark what we've spent (plus/minus about $5k) but I haven't really added up all the little stuff to know what it really cost.  We've been saving/paying for it over a year and a half, and we can afford it/we won't have any debt from the wedding, so I don't see it as a big deal.  We definitely spent a little more than what I thought in the beginning, but there are always a bunch of things you don't think of at the beginning.  In 20 years having those extra few thousand dollars today won't matter, but the memories we'll have of our wedding will.

  • I think its fair to say I have doubled our original budget. My FI is still in disbelief. lol

  • we're theoretically over budget, but are waiting for the final RSVP count but even if everyone comes we're still in a good place...just not ideal.

  • We didn't have an exact budget when we started but we were aiming for 10K. And in the end if everyone RSVP's yes we'll be about 7K over. We aren't going into debt and have saved enough for it, but ideally I would have liked to spend less.

  • Yes, a long long time ago...

    (I have expensive taste.)
  • We are under, our budget was 10k, but I am not comfortable spending that much on one day so have cut costs everywhere possible, are currently under, but we have decided that since we are under we are going to help some of our close friends pay for hotels, etc, since we knew coming to our wedding was a financial hardship for them, so we will end up near budget.

Like pps, we didn't have a set budget... rather a number in our heads.  We have definitely gone over the budget.  I think once everything is said and done, we will have gone about 2,000 over.  I was definitely naive about the cost of a wedding.  Thank goodness for helpful families and tax refunds!  Noone will be going into debt for the wedding... what we can't afford, won't get done.  All the big stuff is paid for now anyway!

  • Same as PP, no firm budget, but a number we wanted to stay under.  We are about where we should be, but my mom has gotten stuff, I've picked up stuff, and there's so much 'little' stuff that I NEVER anticipated (stamps, fake rose petals, additonal favors, etc).  It just seems like I've gotten a bunch of little stuff that I never thought I would get/worry about.  Plus return address labels.  It's just all the stuff people DON'T tell you about.  The big stuff (vendors) were all about or under budget, but I think we'll end up about 20% over budget, but we have the money, we just have to have a simpler life after the wedding to build up the savings account again.

  • Does losing count of how much money i spent count. LOL because i was so on top of things...but after a while i said screw it.
I know my venue cost, florist, DJ etc. but then i overdid the runs to Michaels and Joannes Fabrics. I probably spent a grand just on Bull crap i wont even use.
