Lots of people singing in our wedding...

My FI is known as the "wedding singer" I can't tell you the number of weddings I have gone too with him that he sang in. So naturally, we have a lot of people singing in ours. We have 3 people singing before the ceromony even starts. We want the wedding to start at 2 or 2:30. So is it ok to put that the music will start at 1:45???

  • Most people will show up 15-30 minutes before the ceremony time anyway, except for a Jewish wedding, AFAIK. So you should be fine putting your ceremony time on the invitation (which will be the time you, the bride, walk down the aisle) and most of your guests will be there to hear your pre-ceremony music.

Huh? Why would you say that? When I attend a Jewish wedding (I am Jewish), I and most of the other guests arrive about 15-30 minutes ahead of the stated time as well.

(Sorry, OP, I honestly don't have an answer to your question, but responded just because I was confused by the previous response.)
  • On invitations you list the time you will walk down the aisle (not the time the music starts). Music typically starts a half hour before the wedding, you can start it earlier. While some guests will arrive when or before the music starts, most arrive while the music is already in progress and as was stated above - typically 15-20 minutes before you walk down the aisle.

  • I swear I read elsewhere on one of the boards that Jewish weddings have everyone show up at precisely the time on the invitation. But I could be wrong, hence the 'AFAIK'. It's been months since I read that, though, and even though I retain random odd facts well, I don't mind being corrected.

  • I'd be confused if I got a wedding invitation that said, "Preludes begin at a quarter to 2; ceremony at half-past 2" As I usually arrive about 15 min. early for weddings, am I supposed to arrive at 1:30? Do you really have even 20 min. of prelude music? Most songs are about 3 min.

That said, my church does a hymn-sing before the Christmas Mass. It starts at 10pm, and Mass starts at 10:30pm, and this is in all the announcements. Most people come at 10pm. Between the 2 services, there's about a 2 min. pause, with the organ playing a quiet interlude, so those arriving just for the 10:30 service can be seated without disturbing the earlier service. Then the Mass starts without the usual processional. So it's possible to do a musical mini-service before a longer, more solemn service. You just have to announce it carefully and plan a bit of logistics.

Regarding Jewish weddings, I'm Jewish, and 1) I've read in multiple (but old) books that Jews never arrive on time for parties, including weddings. It's an old joke. (One whose time has past, IMO, but it's out there.) 2) Some Jewish weddings have the separate receptions before the wedding, and there's bedeken and ketubah signing, too, so people may arrive EARLY for these pre-chuppah events.
