Mini-Moon Road Trip across the USA {Wedding date 09-02-2012}

We are from California, and both grew up in chicago. We will be driving there for teh wedding and back afterwards. We surmise we will have some gifts to haul back, and our SUV is the most pratical way.  Our official honeymoon will be over the holidays, a week in Hawaii.{I can't take off the extra week from work attached to the 2 weeks off for the wedding} But for our wedding in September, we will have about 5 days of driving back home together. I planned to research 3 super romantic hotel/resorts along the way to try and make a Mini-Moon out of our trip back. I'm thinking a night in Austin, a night in Las Vegas, a night in Monterey on the Ocean?  Anyone have any experience with this honeymoon road trip? Or any advice against doing it or how to do it better?

Thanks!!

  • I can't think how far it would be off your route right off-hand, but San Antonio is a great city.  Beautiful and lots of sites to see.  I recommend a trip along the Riverwalk.

  • You might be able to find some nice deals that time of year in Pacific Grove, which is right near Monterey. They have some cute old motels that have been re-done & upgraded there & it's really close the the ocean.  It's a nice little town.  Also check Carmel for hotels.  I actually reccommend those locations over staying right in Monterey.  They are both really close to Monterey.

  • For Vegas: You might check out Vdara, a new hotel there that is non-gaming. I have not personally stayed, but from checking it out online, it seems romantic and not noisy or crowded like some gaming hotels get. Other nice ones are Caesar's, Bellagio, the Venetian, and the Wynn. I've heard great things about all of those.

    We are doing a northern Cali trip this summer and are stayin 3 nights in Carmel, which is about 10 min. from Monterey. Carmel would be a more "romantic" town than Monterey. We are staying at the Lamp Lighter Inn, and it has gotten great reviews on Trip Advisor and looks so quaint and romantic! You might want to try one of the cottages, which are bigger. Most/all rooms have wood burning fireplaces and some have deep soaker tubs. It is a B&B but not all the rooms are in one building--they are separate rooms that surround a common courtyard area, so you still have privacy.

    Another area to check out is Big Sur (we are doing a day trip there). It is a little south of Carmel. The views are absolutely gorgeous! Check out the Tickle Pink Inn. It looks amazing; just out of our budget for that part of our stay.

  • I can't add anything to the other states, but I agree about Carmel being nice.

    We did a roadtrip on our HM last September, from San Fran to Coronado Bay near San Diego. During the part of the trip near Monterey we stayed at Clint Eastwood's Mission Ranch for 2 nights. It was amazingly gorgeous. They have small cabins all decorated really cute, and the restaurant there is fabulous (it gets great reviews, and we'd concur). The food was fabulous. It's not cheap, but then we had a friend pre-pay for our dinner.  We had a "meadow view room", which had a small deck/porch overlooking the meadow with the sheep. When I got up in the morning they were out there, munching away, LOL. Very idyllic and I'd say romantic. I called them I think 3-4 months before our honeymoon and they only had ONE room left for our two night stay. Our room had a gas fireplace and whirlpool tub. Look into it early. There's also a free breakfast in the tennis court building.

    On the road leading to the Ranch there is the actual Carmel Mission, founded by Fr Serra. We took a self-guided tour there, and it was beautiful.

    We also went to the Monterrey Aquarium, everyone said we shouldn't miss it, and they were right. It's fabulous.

    We sadly didn't get into the town of Carmel,but understand it is lovely.
  • I dont really have anything to add other than that sounds like an amazing time! Have fun!!

  • If you are in Texas definitely check out San Antonio's Riverwalk!!  I've been there twice and have loved it both times!!!

    Also, you said you were going to Vegas for one night, if it isn't windy check out the watershow at the Bellagio, and head to over to Fremont Street for the lightshow (doesn't matter if it is windy for that)!!  They are AMAZING!! :)

    I've never done a honeymoon road trip, so can't really tell you anything about that..  Good luck!! :)
