Costa Rica Question

So I've been reading the boards and have gotten very interested in Costa Rica, but I've heard nightmare things about having to rent a car there. For those of you doing/or who did, mutiple places on your trip, how did you get around, did you drive or is there an easier way to get from Arenal to one of the beach locations?

    We rented through Alamo and got a Garmin GPS with it. We LOVED driving. Yeah it was crazy and we certainly said some choice words at times, but we drove from San Jose to La Fortuna, then to Liberia. We saw so many great things and could stop at little shops, restaurants, anything along our way. The GPS was very easy to follow. We think driving was one of the best parts of the trip!

    Did they try and scam you at the car rental place? My friend ran into that issue when she went a few years ago.  They tried to scam her and then pre-authed her card for a ridiculous amount and took forever to get it returned, so I'm a bit worried about that part.
