Candy bar.. how much is too much??

We've planned to do a candy bar but I'm having a hard time deciding how much candy is enough, or too much!!  All the candy is sold in pounds and for some reason I just can't picture it - so for 100 guests I'd like to have a bit of everything, chocolate, sour, sweet, chewy, hard, soft ... you get the idea!  I don't want leftover candy for days though - anyone out there who can help? Thanks!!!

We did 1/3 pound per person for DDs wedding and that worked out well.

Also keep in mind that the larger container that you have for guests to put the candy in, the more candy you will need.

Just buy a bag, container, whatever that roughly  holds however much candy you want your guests to take home. Then base your purchases on that. If people are given a large bag to fill, they are going to fill it, if they are given a smaller bag, they will fill that. KWIM?

The amount of candy you use is not all that directly related to how much guests eat/take.  You need a LOT to make the proper visual impact, so stock up on the cheapest/on sale candy to fill bigger size containers, then get lesser amount of the good stuff in smaller containers for variety.  If you shop carefully you can get good deals on bagged candies at such places as CVS and walmart.

You can also add pretzels, popcorn, peanuts or apples to bulk it up a bit, as those are much cheaper per pound, and many people like a little salty with their sweets.

My sister's fall-colored candy buffet had about 1/2 pound of 'stuff' per person, but did use pretzels and apples for some of it. :)  It looked great.

Watch for the holiday sales on Candy.  We are doing that to see if we can pick up packaged candy in the right colors.  Even Macy's and some of the department stores slash prices on the good candy after the holidays.

Great ideas!! I'm waiting until after the holidays for some of my green candies ... though the temptation to buy and put it all together is killing me!!  Who knew candy could be so costly??  LOL
