NO idea what our centerpieces are going to look like: vague florist

Is this normal?  It's a month before our wedding and I still have very little idea about what our tables are going to look like.

I want purple dahlias, berry (like sangria berry), and ivory arrangements.  Both times that I've met with the florist he tells me he wont' know until just before the wedding if he can get the dhalias, and he just keeps throwing together whatever leftovers he has in the shop to show me example centerpieces.  Is this common practice?

Maybe I'm a control freak, but I want to KNOW what our centerpieces are BEFORE the day of the wedding in case I hate them.  I can't control everything that happens on our wedding day, but I can certainly tweak and improve things leading up to it, right?

Am I just losing my grip and need to relax?

AND!  I want table runners, but can't find the kind I'm looking for, so I asked the florist for chair sashes as table runners and he suggested I just go for a more classic look with just the linens.  It sounded more like a blow off (I don't have time to look into this).  Esp, when he suggested table runners in the beginning.

Ugh.  I'm just irritated and starting to get Type A about everything coming together right. Or does this guy owe me more detail????

I didn't work with a florist so I may not be the best to give advice, but I personally think he needs to get his $hit together and give you more information and details.

I definitely think he needs to at the very least, draw you a sketch of what your centerpieces will look like especially since I'm sure you're paying a decent chunk of change for them!

I also think that if he has the resources to get you the table runners / chair sashes, he should be on that too. It does sound like he tried to blow off the responsibility of that, but then again I'm not sure if that's an actual responsibility of a florist.

This situation would bug the crap out of me. I hope everything works out well for you!!

I didn't know what our centerpieces would look like until I walked into the reception.  But, I also didn't ask.  I trusted our florist to do a good job and didn't have an exact vision in mind.

If you need to have that much control over the look, you should have been up front with him about that at your initial consultation.

Dahlias are a late summer flower that don't hold up well for shipment, their heads are so heavy that they will droop and begin to drop petals.  If your wedding isn't until October, it doesn't seem unreasonable that he might not know if they will be available since they will not be in season.

Is your florist providing the other linens?  Why would a florist provide table runners and chair sashes?

It's 57 days until our day and I don't know what our centerpieces will look like. I trust the florist, but I also told her I need to see it in order to really get the picture. She vividly described her vision and showed the flowers she will use. I do not know anything about flowers, so of course I can't picture it. Ask your florist to show you samples of a table. I'm sure they will charge you for that sample, but you should get a better idea of what you're getting.

I sympathize with you.  Get him/her to put in your contract your preferred flowers as well as an approved back up flower in case the dahlia's arent available.  At least this way, he is contractually bound to stick to what you have approved.

    Best of luck!
    Mrs. G to you...
