NWR: Finding a home-vent

My FI and I are still struggling on finding the right home for us.  We know it's a buyers market and homes are a lot less expensive than they were several years ago.  So we thought it would be a great time to buy a house.  We have been searching for several months now.  We CANNOT find anything that we would even consider having as our home.  We had hoped to find a home and be in it by the wedding but right now it is not looking like it.  Then, there's the fact that winter is fastly approaching, and it's really not a time people put their homes up for sale.  There have been a lot of beautiful homes we have seen but they are fast approaching 100+ years.  I love the character the older homes have, but there is just some much work and money that is going to need to go into these homes.  Then the other issue is most of our town is in a flood zone and we obviously do not want a house that has had or gets a lot of water in the basement and if it's in the flood zone you're required to have flood insurance which can be pretty costly.  With all this being said, we may just consider building a home.  We can have it made to our wants and needs and sometimes it can even be cheaper to build than buy.  If we did this, they wouldn't be able to start until spring so that means we will be renting the first few months of our marriage.  This is completely fine by me because the end result will be a home we both love and will live in the rest of our lives and raise our family in.  This has just been the most frustrating process.  With all these homes for sale, I thought we would have found one fairly quickly.  If anyone has any tips or suggestions on building a home, please let me know.  Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: NWR: Finding a home-vent

  • If it makes you feel better, I don't see the housing "buyers" market going anywhere anytime soon.... I'm really interested in reading about real estate and unfortunately foreclosures are continuing and are projected to be through all of next year as banks are still "catching up".  Obviously foreclosures are not fun for current homeowners, but they can be good for those looking to buy.

Sooo in summary... don't feel down... the prices aren't going anywhere anytime soon so I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to find the right house for you!!

Well we just listed our house right before thanksgiving - we were under contract in less than 9 days!  It's definitely a buyers market but in our area there just isn't a lot of houses for sale - but just don't assume that people don't sell in the winter.  There are plenty of crazies out there like FI and I that do!

It's not a bad thing to rent - not ideal either.  We will be in that same situation come the end of January ... But we would rather rent for a little while and make sure we  either find the house/land that we want or will be building this spring.  Definitely not ideal but I always think it's better to buy what you want and make sure its something you can live in forever than have the mindset of "oh this house will do for now" and try to sell it a couple of years later!

I'm sorry that the house search isn't going well for you guys!  We had the same problem when we bought our current house.  We looked at over 100 houses and searched for over 6 months before we found the one that we LOVED!  And to be quite honest if FI didn't get his new job I would have been perfectly fine staying in it forever!  :(   Oh well though - I guess what I'm trying to say is don't give up you'll find it sooner or later!  Just don't compromise!

ETA: Completely random - but I just now realized that TK has a spell check.... OMG i'm slow!

  • Im sorry and dont get too frustrated.  My FI and I had this same problem, we couldnt find a house we liked.  So what we did is bought 3 acers of land and cleared it off.
We were going to rent but we didnt want to pay rent when we found out the notes on a mobile home would be cheaper. Then we decided to buy a new mobile home and put it on the side of the land for right now.

I get out of school next year. After I get a stable job we are going to start building a house on our land.  When the house is done we are going to see the mobile home and get whomever to move it off of our land.

Dont worry you will find one that you are in love with and if you dont then try and find some land and build one.  Good Luck!
