Rabbi Vent

UGHHH. So I was all excited yesterday because I finally found a Rabbi who does interfaith weddings. Well he called me back today, and he is on vacation the day of my wedding. He is literaly the only Rabbi in the area who will do interfaith. He gave me some names of people in NYC who will do it but then I have to pay for them to travel. Now it looks like I'm going to have to have my uncle (who is a judge) do it. I'm glad that he will but I really wanted a Rabbi. I don't understand why none of them will do it. My FI is not religous at all, our kids will be Jewish, why can't I have the wedding I want??

Re: Rabbi Vent

  • I'm sorry! What a huge pain. But think of it this way, at least you get to have your uncle involved in the wedding?

  • I've always been under the impression that rabbi(s?) are very strict on who they would marry. Kind of like the Catholic faith and all their "rules".
But I agree with PP, at least your having your uncle to do it now so there should be a personal connection now

  • I know exactly how disappointing this type of thing can be!! Definitely makes for an emotional rollercoaster. I wanted to offer some help, so did a little online research during my lunch break. Most of the ones I found online were from NYC and since I don't know what part of upstate NY you are from it was hard to look lots. But I did find this website that may be of help to you: http://www.interfaithfamily.com/jml/index.php?option=com_civicrm&view=Profiles&Itemid=62&rd=2 these are obviously people who are more then willing to do interfaith ceremonies. Never hurts to try it out! If you want more help/research feel free to PM me!! And *hugs* this kind of bump is really crummy!

  • Thanks for trying to help. Unfortunatly that site just directed me to more NYC Rabbis. I can't really afford to pay them travel fees. I'm just glad I have a back up. Now I just need to get my Uncle permission to perform our ceremony. He is judge in Conn. Luckily I know our goveners cheif of staff pretty well so this shouldn't be difficult.

  • I'm so sorry about this! I can relate because I am the Jewish counterpart to an interfaith wedding, although it's really not interfaith because my FI whole heartedly agreed to a completely Jewish wedding and life thereafter. My rabbi is reform, and is doing it. Have you been looking into just Reform rabbis? They seem to be a little more lenient. Especially if they know you'll have Jewish children, etc.
