Dress damaged...what should I do?

I went in for my "final" fitting yesterday and found that the lace on my dress has been damaged. It's on one side right on the top of the bust in a very noticeable area. I was not having any alterations done in that area..the only alterations were taking the straps in. The damage looks like something caught/cut/snagged the lace pattern. It is completely split and frayed on both ends and the area around it looks a little worn/frayed. The seamstess acted like it wasn't a big deal and said she could fix it by sewing it back together. I don't think it's going to look like it should though because it has frayed back already. The shop said "oh this happens all the time"...which didn't really make me feel any better. But they too acted like it was an easy fix. I let them know that I was very upset about it and they swore they could fix it. I want to be prepared when I go in to try it on again but I'm not sure what my next step should be.  I bought and paid for a brand new dress and it has been damaged in their store. What course of action should I take if the "fix" that they promise is not satisfactory? My wedding is 11/3.  I've already paid for the dress ($1300) but have not yet paid for the alterations ($100).

  • That really depends on what your dress looks like.  Is it all lace?  Only a lace panel?

  • This is my dress. Lace all over.

  • It's noticable enough that if you're standing within a few feet of me you can see it. And with it frayed the way it is I think it will show up in any close up pictures. When I walked out of the dressing room I immediately said to the girl that was attending me "what happened to my dress"..my best friend stood up saying "what's wrong with it" and as soon as she looked at me said "ohhh." She noticed right away before I pointed it out. When they tell me it's ready I'll take someone who hasn't seen it with me. I don't see how they could get me another dress in less than 3 weeks time so I'll have to wear it whether it's wearable or not.

  • Let them do what they can.  You might be surprised with the skill of your seamstress.

Call the salon, see when your alterations should be done, and when they'll have it fixed so you can try it on again before they press it.  If it isn't fixed, I'd do as Linger suggested and have them pay for your dress, and then figure out the next steps.  This is going to sound terrible, but they may be able to pull a brand new dress (ie - someone ordered the same dress in the same size, and they haven't been notified yet) and rush your alterations.  Or, Allure may have a brand new one on the rack that they can overnight ship to alter in time.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Dress damaged...what should I do? : Well no they wouldn't be able to get you your dress again, but they certainly could pay for a new dress and you could have it within 3 weeks.  You can buy some wedding dresses off the rack.  They don't all have to be made to order. When you bring someone new with you don't even tell them there's a problem with it.  Otherwise they will be looking for the problem and it will be easier to spot like a<font color="#ff0000"> small red dot on a cashmere sweater.

  • How soon are they planning on fixing it?  I would demand that they fix it immediately.  With just over 2 weeks until your wedding, you don't have much time to choose a new dress and have it altered, if the dress is actually unfixable.

  • I would probably also demand that they finish the alterations/fix the problem within a couple of days, so you have time to find another dress, if necessary.

Also, even if they DO fix it, and the dress is wearable, there is no way I'd pay for the alterations.  And, I'd probably ask for some sort of restitution for screwing up the dress in the first place.  If the dress is wearable, and the snag/repair isn't SUPER noticable, it was still damaged in their possession,

They would have to make that dress look perfect and "new" for me to pay for any alterations and not lose my shittt in there.

  • Everyone has it covered.  I just wanted to say it's a beautiful dress.
