pop and snacks

My FI asked me today why the ice tea had no flavor. I told him I have decided to cut sugary drinks and pop out of my diet. His response but pop is one of his four food groups. My response was well if you want pop that badly get something I do not drink I.e. mountain dew. I have also suggest we stop buying and or making desserts and chips and dips which are my weakness. He doesn't like that either but I need to lose weight and he supports that. I know I will be seeing sweets on the shelves I can not reach, but I will just have to ignore them and eat healthy snacks. Is anyone else trying to cut sweets from their diet

Re: pop and snacks

  • I am too. And the best way to do it is buys special K snacks. They have a lot of different kinds an flavors. They sweet I know, but it isnt bad for you diet and it kills your desire to eat desserts. My fi is really supportive and doesn't buy the stuffs I like, once in a while he does and hides it then I find it and eat the whole think. I am chocolate addicted. If there is a hive bag of mm around and I find it I will get water and eat the whole bag

Completely cutting something you love out of your diet is usually not a good strategy.  Most people do ok with it for awhile, and then give in to the cravings and binge completely.  A better strategy for most people is to moderate it.  I KNOW that I need something sweet after dinner to feel satisfied.  Otherwise I want to snack for the rest of the night and I never quite feel ready to stop eating.  So I found something that fits into my diet without killing it:  I love the Lindor truffles.  One of them is a negligible amount of calories that I plan into my eating, and they're rich enough that it's satisfying.  And if one night I want two?  That's fine too.  But I always know I can have more tomorrow, so I never feel the need to eat 3, 4, 5, or more, like I often did when I tried to not eat them at all.

  • I agree with not cutting food out entirely. There are many of low calorie snacks and sweets. Pop chips, sugar free pudding, sugar free jello, fudgsicles, almonds. If you cut them out that is when you get the urge to binge and overindulge.

  • I know the feeling! My FI doesn't quite get it sometimes. I've told him multiple times I'm trying to drink less pop and he keeps buying one for me when he runs over to the gas station. And of course in the mornings I'm looking for caffeine so I give in and grab it :-/

But I agree with what some PPs have said. Cutting things out completely isn't always the answer. It's definitely important to cut back on the junk, but in moderation it's ok. Just stick with it and try to buy healthy things when you can. Eat This Not That is a great resource for finding better options for the things you like. You can either buy the books or look at what they have on the Men's Health magazine website. The best thing I've learned is really paying attention to labels. It may say "lower sodium" or something, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a lot still!

  • Good luck! Food, especially the sweet and salty stuff, can be such a battle. Eventually though, the more you stick with it, you should start noticing your taste for it lessening. I used to indulge a lot, but now I can't stand anything that's overly sweet or salty. I still have my moments, usually it's a PMS moment, lol, but that's when the moderation comes in. Allow yourself that small indulgence because if you don't, you'll almost always end up binging :/

  • I am an admitted potato chip addict.  What I started doing is making my own chips.  When you do that, it takes time and you are less likely to go overboard and they taste so much better.

    Here's what I do.

Thinly slice a potato with the skin on.

Arrange on a cookie sheet. Drizzle with olive oil.

Season with Kosher salt, cracked black pepper and chopped fresh rosemary.

Bake at 350 until they crisp.

  • I agree with not cutting things out entirely. Luckily for me, my FI doesn't know the way to the grocery store - so I don't have a problem with him buying bad food. I have set rules for myself. In general, I don't drink much but water. In the morning I will have my orange juice, because I love it and am willing to cut calories somewhere else to have it. If I go out to a movie, I'll have a diet coke - because I want to. I don't drink the full sugar stuff anymore, just because I know that I'll start craving it again. I work in a place where pop is free - so for me I had to set a boundary. I could drink my whole day's calories of coke in 20 minutes. I also prefer to eat my calories than drink them.

As far as treats go, if it fits in my calories for the day and I want it, I eat it! It's really important to maintain a sense of normalcy, and by allowing myself to indulge (but not over-indulge) I can do that!

I disagree with this too.  It works for some people, but for a lot of people, that stuff isn't satisfying either.  I'd much rather have a smaller amount of the real deal.  It's so much more satisfying and delicious.

  • I am not going to cut it out completely but I am going to try to cut it out alot.
  • I am on weight watchers and they emphasize to eat whatever you like in moderation for the exact reason PP have said. If you dont then you binge and that is horrible.

  • I am in love with the crystal light drink sticks.  I drink infinitely more water than I used to because I add those to my water bottle.  They're 10 calories a pop and they come in some amazing flavors (including appletini, mojito, and margarita!) so I don't get bored with them.  I haven't had a soda in over a year.

Research shows that the more we restrict what may be our favorite 'sometimes foods', the more we obsess over them. Think about giving yourself permission in certain situations to still enjoy. What if instead of 100% no sweets, you allowed yourself 1 iced tea on the weekends and during that iced tea, you and your husband to be sat together and enjoyed eachothers' company?

Or perhaps pick up a single serving of your favorite sweet to split with him once a week. Only buy the one serving so you're not tempted to continue past your satisfaction point.

You're doing a great job making a concentrated effort! Keep it up.

  • I have an awful sweet tooth.  I have been attempting to make conscious effort to replace my sweet snacks with fruit.  Everytime I wander to the fridge looking for chocolate I attempt to divert myself to the colorful drawer filled with strawberries, apples, nectarines, etc. So far so good.  I am not completely cutting out the chocolate, but I have am sill finding a way to get my sweet fix without the guilt.
