June 2013 Weddings

running out of time?

I finally bought my daughter's grooms maid dress a few days back but still need to find one for my MOH. My wedding is June 1, and before Christmas was over she told me she wanted to wait til after the holidays to buy. Totally understandable, but the ladies at the dress shop freaked me out about how little time is left now! How can I approach this without sounding pushy?

Re: running out of time?

  • I think my biggest concern would be fittings, if she needs them.  I was more concerned about missing the prom season rush so we ordered dresses early January and they should be here by March, and our prom season is usually mid to end of May.  The seamstresses around here get slammed.

I would say to her exactly what you said here...the dress shop ladies say it is a serious concern that it has not been ordered.  It's the truth.  But is there another reason why she may be hesitating to buy, like finances, or weight issues?

Truthfully, her reasons are probably a little bit of both. I am offering to help pay, not to imply that I want her in an expensive dress, but she's also needing a size 20 or 24 so it's hard finding something that she feels looks good on her. I think she's a beautiful woman and I love her to death and want her to be happy. So many dress styles don't seem to work for her though, in her opinion.

  • Yeah, that makes it a little more complicated.  I'm sure you are afraid of hurting her feelings or making her feel uncomfortable.  That has got to be so hard.  But because you are running out of time you have to bring it up somehow.  It could be she doesn't want to try on in front of other people so maybe find out when the shop is the slowest or maybe they would do a private appointment.  I wish I could be more helpful.  This is a tough one.

  • Can u find something off the rack??? don't rule that option out unless its a specific dress. For what it's worth David's told me 16 weeks for my dress and it was in, in 3

  • Those ladies at the shops freaked me out too! They told me I was way behind. This happened at multiple stores. I got mine ordered no problem. My mom recently went in for a MOTB dress and they had her try on a bunch of bridesmaid dresses and said you could use those as well. What did they tell my mom? That she had plenty of time to get one..... She went to the same places and talked to the same people. I think they push you more with bridesmaids because of fittings. Also it's for more people and they want to make the sale at their shop. I don't think your going to have any trouble with timing and geting a dress.
