DJ vs. Band?

Hi - any suggestions, advice on a DJ vs a band and any recommendations for both would be greatly appreciated. We are getting married in NYC in April.

Thanks!

You'd be better off aksing on your local NY board for specific band or DJ recommendations.

In terms of band vs DJ, we had a band and were so happy with our decision.  Bands are significantly more expensive than DJs, but our band really made the reception.  They had everyone up on the dance floor and added so much energy by interacting with the crowd.

The key to having a band is to find a really good one that can play a wide variety of music.  It's better to have a good DJ than a mediocre band.

    Depends on what you want.

Dj's are generally cheaper than bands and can play a huge variety of music. Most say if you really want a song that they don't have they'll get it before your wedding or you can bring in a copy of it. If you go this route, meet with them first, find out what the price includes, and see if you can watch a video of them in action. Make sure their personality meshes with what you want (we didn't want anyone super cheesy trying to get people out on the dance floor for instance. We have been at weddings where the DJ pressures people to do so and goes around throwing props at people--not for us, but some people like that stuff).

Bands are pricier, but a good band could make the reception. I'd maybe find a cover band unless you have a band you just LOVE their original music, but most guests like to dance to well-known songs. See if you can find one that plays a wide variety as well. Also, remember bands take breaks, so there will be times they are not playing. See if you could hook up an iPod or something to play during those times so the dance floor doesn't totally stop.

SherB27 - Our band Full Effect from Elegant Ensembles. The agency is based out of NJ, but the band has showcases in the city. We spent alot of time looking for the right one and they are amazing. They can play anything and most of all they are so much fun. When I think of my wedding, I get so excited for the music. Good bands def can make the party!

I wouuld prefer a DJ because they can play a variety of music.  Unless you find a band that can play a ton of different options, I would go with the DJ.  And as for reccomendations, I would ask your local board!
