BM dress opinions!

So now that the  holidays are over its back into wedding decisions! I am finding myself torn for my bridesmaid dresses. This weather is throwing me for a loop and making October weather even more unpredictable. I had originally planned on long BM dresses because of the fall and the fact that its more of a night wedding-ish (330-9). But I am finding some really cute short styles and am wondering if they may be a better option if it turns out really hot.

For a night time fall themed wedding would short dresses look weird? I know a lot of it is what the girls are comfortable in and what I want but when I ask them for input they are no help! Any opinions would be appreciated!

  • I don't think it's going to be "hot" in October, if anything, you might get some snow (Love New England weather!). That being said, I don't think it'd look weird. Is this an outdoor ceremony? The decision is yours, but if it was me, I'd go long given the afternoon wedding/fall factors.
  • When in October? If in the beginning the will be a chance it will be warm out but I wouldn't say hot. In the second half of the month it will probably be more cool to warm. I am also getting married in October but I am doing short dresses for the girls (I let them pick). Also, I don't think it will look weird at all if it is a might wedding.

  • The wedding is October 6th. It is a short outdoor ceremony (weather permitting) with cocktail hour in the garden followed by dinner/dancing etc inside the banquet hall. I am just torn because I don't want the girls to be too hot or cold.. because yes mother nature is wonderful like that up here in October.

  • I say pick a short dress if you like them better and the BMs don't care but maybe give them the option to wear some sort of cover up if they want to for cocktail hour.

  • I always love a long BM gown, and for a later afternoon / evening wedding in October, I think a long dress would be perfect.

  • Even though initially all of my BMs said they didn't care, it slowly became apparent to me that most of them either truly didn't care or preferred short.  Even if it's cold, you could always give them pashimas or, in all honesty, with a short ceremony they'll be fine either way.  I doubt a long dress will provide that much more warmth, ya know?  Plus after a while, I'd assume long dresses would be not as comfortable and easy to dance in..

I'm getting married in late March and wanted long dresses but after about a month of looking, I took a few hints and steered toward the short dresses.  Much more likely they'll wear them again too!

  • I think that a short dress for an evening fall wedding is fine. However, make sure you find something that they can cover up with, as it might be breezy. I love the look of long dresses, but I really wanted my bridesmaids to be able to wear their dresses again, especially at how much they can cost!
  • If you & your BMs like the short styles better, go for it--just get wraps/some type of cover-up for them to wear since there's a good chance they'll be chilly. Or maybe even a tea length dress? (although personally I don't think they're as flattering..but you never know)

FWIW, I went to a wedding in mid September and the BMs had long dresses... I bet they don't keep you much warmer, but they did look nice. I feel like long dresses look more formal too, if that's what you're going for.

  • I think either will work.  However, consider you venue... is it indoors or out?  fancier or more low key?  If you are doing a ballroom then I would say short doesn't work that well.  Also we had snow in october this year!  Although that is super rare I wouldn't want my girls to freeze.  My personal opinion is go for long but either could be cute.
  • I was wondering who is the designer you are looking at?
