1% Food&Beverage tax and Belle Mer

I just got my invoice from Belle Mer and they're applying the 1% Newport food and beverage tax to everything including site fees, admin fees, rentals, even the payment for the DJ that I hired through them.  Is this right?  My contract says the following:
A 7% State of Rhode Island tax will be added to all food and beverage charges, set-up charges, and other services as
defined by the State of Rhode Island. A 1% City of Newport tax will be added to all food and beverage charges.

If the 1% does apply to everything including services and stuff, why doesn't the contract state that, just like how it does with the 7% tax?

It's not a big difference, but it's still money that we can use for something else.

I'd ask them about it, and if you are uncomfortable with their response, I'd take it to the City of Newport and inquire what would be the proper practice. 1% of a Belle Mer minimum is enough for me to bother with it.

From what I understand, it should only be applied to the food and beverage.....

I know that the 7% State tax applies to everything the venue does for you. When I questioned my bill last year at another place, I called the state to make sure. Anything that is associated with the reception is taxable. Only our ceremony fee was not taxable because it could be considered a separate "event."
I would assume that Newport's 1% would be the same rules, but you should be able to call City Hall and find out.

I'm not a Belle Mer girl but these fees apply to everyone and I'm pretty sure I was informed by my caterer that it applies as you stated above....the 7% across the board and the 1% to food and beverage. You should contact your venue and have this cleared up. Contacting the tax office in the Newport City hall isn't a bad idea either.

We touched base with our Event Planner at Belle Mer regarding the same thing. We'll let you know if we hear anything.
