Meet with priest Saturdayhow to prepare

Hi ladies! Only 87 more days until we marry and I'm wrapping everything up now! We attended our Catholic Engaged Encounter last weekend and it was truly a lifechanging experience. I'm still feeling high from how positive it was! If any brides in the DV/NoVA/MD area are looking to fulfill preCana, I highly recommend the Maryland Engaged Encounter!

Now onto my question...we meet with the priest this Saturday second meeting to go over the ceremony. I was hoping those of you who've done this can advise me on how to prepare. Aside from bringing all our documents, do we need to provide anything else? Names of readers?

Are there any questions you advise I ask?

Thanks so much!!!

Re: Meet with priest Saturdayhow to prepare

  • he will probably want to know your readers, gift bearers (if you are having Mass) and your witnesses.

he will probably ask about wehther you want organ and cantor, and if so, he will probably put you in touch with the music director.

he may ask if you are doing things like flowers for mary.

he will probably shcedule the details of your rehearsal.
  • We mainly discussed which vow/blessing versions we wanted and why we chose the readings and songs that we did.

Every priest is different, but ours also talked to DH & I each privately so we would have the option to disclose any concerns or issues. I also had to place my hand on the Bible and say I was who I said I was and wouldn't withhold children knowingly from my future spouse. It was kind of intense!

I did bring a printout of all of the pertinent information and correct spellings (names of readers, wedding party, parents, music, etc) so the parish secretary could type everything up easily for our programs.
  • We were planning from out of town so we had this meeting a week before the wedding to finalize ceremony details but at this meeting our priest asked us for all our reading selections, who would be reading them. How we wanted the processional to go, which blessings we picked etc. Did we want Communion under both kinds, would we provide Eucharistic ministes? He also talked to us about what we wanted him to say during the homily (we were surprised by this, and basically just reiterated why we picked the readings that we did and why they were meaningful and asked him to go from there with what he thought was appropriate.) Basically worked out all the logistics of how the ceremony was to go so that we would be ready for the reherasal. We also had him look over our programs to make sure they were okay before we got them printed.

Finally, we confirmed that he had all the paperwork we needed and that all our info was correct. (Baptismal certificates, engaged encounter certificate, etc). Although then he called us back a few days before the wedding because he was missing something (gave me a heart attack) and turns out he forgot to fill in our parents religoius affiliations and wanted to double check our address or something.

  • Have your Baptismal certificates and Pre-cana certificate.

Do you have the Together Forever book?  Look through it and have your readings, Mass parts, etc picked out.

He will ask you some questions while you are together.  Then he'll separate you and ask questions to both of you individually.  They will also want to know maid of honor and best man (or witness) names, date of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation (which is why it is good to have your baptismal certificate)

Other than that, if you don't know the priest personally, he will probably take the time to get to know both of you a little better.

    Have fun!
