What is a reasonable amount to ask your bridesmaid to pay for their dress?

Also, do brides typically pay for bm professional hair & makeup if it's not DIY?

Ask your BMs individually and in private what their budget is for a dress. The lowest number is the number you stick to when picking out a dress.

As for hair and makeup. If you require them to get it done then you pay for it. If you only extend the offer but do not care either way then they pay for it. Of course, everyone can also DIY it themselves as well.

Ask each BM privately, what their max budget would be for a dress. Then pick the lowest amount, that is your reasonable amount.

As for hair & makeup, if you are requiring it, you must pay for it. If you have a certain salon you go to or are having someone come to you, you can ask your BP if they want to have their hair done. Just say, I am scheduling an apointment at x salon. The cost for hair is y and makeup is z. Let me know if you are interested in getting your hair & makeup done and I can set up all of our appointments together.

I paid for all of my BMs to get their hair done. But they were able to have it styled however they wanted. It was something extra I wanted to do for my BMs, it was not apart of their BP gifts either. Some people are very particular about their hair and how its styled. I also had a make up arist coming and asked them who wanted their make up done at x dollars.

I knew, even before asking my bridesmaids, that at least one would have zero budget to pay for a dress. I didn't want not being able to afford a dress to hinder her being by my side. Therefore, DH & I made the decision to include all bridal party attire in our own wedding budget.

It was the best decision ever, as everyone got to enjoy the day and not stress about spending money on attire they'd never wear again.

I also paid for all hair and makeup for the same reasons as above.

Thanks, ladies! This is super helpful information. I have a bm that lives in Spain and is already spending $1200 just fo fly back for the wedding (she told me this before I actually asked her to be a bm). My FI and I are thinking about paying for her dress.

Just finished reading the posts and I must say I"ve been a bridesmaid 8 times now i'm the bride, and I had to pay for my, hair and makeup only one bride, well actually the mothe of the bride paid for the hair and make up and all the brides wanted our hair and make up a certain way and they went as far as either going to the salon or hiring make up artist and hair stylist to come to the hotel room. i gotta think about all this and see how many BM's I want in my wedding party.

I didn't directly ask my BMs about dress budgets but knowing a couple of my BMs are students or just recently done school I tried to pick fairly inexpensive dresses. I am going to pay for hair and probably let everyone do their own make-up, although of course they could get it done too if they preferred.

They can do their hair however they want but since I do want us to all go together I will cover it.

I don't think my friends are selfish, I just don't think they knew to do that and us as bridesmaid didn't know either these are women that i've been friends with for many years and i would do anything for them, me just being a bride i'm on the opposite side now so all information i can get is needed, but please don't call my friends selfish because maybe they didn't know.

Bridesmaids should be consulted about how much they wish/can afford to spend on a dress.

I know one good site: JenJenHouse.com. I recently bought one dress from them.

It arrived on time as promised and seriously is amazing! I paid 100.00 for this dress and it looks like I paid 500 for it! So pleased with this purchase!

Also, recently they have an activity on their FB. You could go and have a look.

You could also see the reviews on their website first and then decide.
