Outdoor Ceremony

HOw will your outdoor ceremony play out? Readings? If so how many? What parts of a traditional ceremony will you have or not have? Trying to decide what I want to do and my officiant (his uncle) told me to kind of make a rough draft and we will go from there...but i dont know what to do! :)       (He is Lutheran and I am Catholic)

Re: Outdoor Ceremony

  • I got some sample ceremonies from fellow knotties and then wrote our own. It wasn't super traditional (we're not religious) and we didn't have any readings. We did exchange rings and we wrote our own vows. Google "sample wedding ceremonies" and see if any you find strike a chord with you.
  • Ours is pretty short, no readings. Just a short message, vows and that's it. 15 minutes is the goal!

Have you and your FI discussed this at all?  If not, then it's the perfect discussion topic for your next date. Both of you should plan to take notes, listening to the other (you take notes on his preferences, he takes notes on yours) about what you'd like.  It may be easier to start with what you've seen in other ceremonies that you do not like or that's made a positive impression, then that will become -- likely -- an authentic discussion of what you want your ceremony to be.

H and I were both raised Catholic but H did not want to, and I could not, get married in the Church.  We created a ceremony that was a bit of patchwork from things we liked/did not like in other weddings, talked about what's important for expressing our sentiments and what we wanted our guests (very, very close family and friends) to take away.  We had lots of live music (string quartet), including a 30 minute prelude (mostly classical, but kicked off with Purple Haze!) and a violin duet during the ceremony.

We began by walking out onto the terrace, hand-in-hand, and greeted each of our guests, one by one. Our expression of intent and vows were fairly traditional, as was our ring exchange. We had a truncated hand blessing and included an Old Testament reading. My cousin, a Protestant minister, performed the ceremony.   We recessed to another classical piece played by the quartet.

We really LOVED our ceremony.  I'm sure you will come up with something tha works for you!  Google your heart out and you'll find inspiration, for sure.  Good luck!

Learn something new every day. Not that this effects me, but it's interesting.

But she said she "could not" get married in the church for some reason.

<div>Ooooh, do Catholics combust into flames the moment they marry outside of the church? Does it go on their credit score?</div>
