Family Making Cakes/Desserts/Pies?

I love the idea of having my family make their favorite desserts or family recipes for the reception. People have already asked what they can do to help/contribute. Has anyone done this? I wonder if people may be a little stressed bringing preparing a dessert and arriving on time for a wedding and such but wouldn't it be like bringing a dessert or food to a party? Is this something that I should skip or could it work out ok? Also we are having an outdoor wedding with about 75 people.

  • It's really not appropriate to have your guests provide food for the party you're throwing. The reception is a thank you to your guests for coming, and they shouldn't have to provide the refreshments for that.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

    Ditto.

  • While I agree wholeheartedly with the others, have you asked your caterer/venue if they will allow food to come in from non-licensed kitchens?  Some will, many won't.

Think about it - you have made your world famous whatever kind of cake with buttercream frosting for someone else's wedding.  What are you supposed to do with it prior to the reception?  How do you keep it refrigerated?  What are you bringing it in on so that it will look nice on the table?  What a hassle!

It is wonderful to be surrounded by people who are willing to help you with your wedding but please don't make them provide their own dessert and stick them with the hassle of dealing with transporting it to your wedding.  Remember - they have to take dirty dishes home too!

It's a wedding, not a potluck.  I appreciate the fact that you want their famous or favorite desserts, but you should be hosting your guests, not asking them to host you.

Plus, you have to worry about people coming through with the stuff, bringing enough of each item, serving utensils, and hopefully, someone's item not being stored correctly and giving everyone a food borne illness.  I wouldn't risk it.
