Retro and Vintage Weddings

help with decorating!

my wedding is a little last minute. my fiance is in the military and getting deployed shortly after. we were going to go to the justice of peace and have a wedding later on but it is back on and we have our venue. since it is july 2nd and he is in the army and the time frame, we are aiming for a vintage 1940's type of them. not the loud red white and blue, but a dark red and dark blue theme. i would like to hear if anyone has done this!

Re: help with decorating!

  • I have not, but a number of brides on here have done 1940s themes. I've seen some really cool centerpieces done with old typewriters, books, records, lamps, etc. If you have an antique store or salvation army store nearby, you might be able to find all kinds of items to use for your decor. I've also seen people use pictures of 1940s screen stars to decorate with or use for table numbers. Or you could use old wedding pics for inspiration for your flowers.

A lot of your themeing can be done with your clothes, makeup, and music. If you had victory rolls, a birdcage veil, and red lipstick, for example, people would get the feel without you having to buy a lot of extras. Even if you don't get really 40s with your decor, having swing and jazz from the era would really help get people into the mood.

  • You know who had some cool retro 40s stuff? The Red Cross.

I have a hilarious reprint in my house: Our Boys Need Sox! with all sorts knitting patterns and stuff.

That's the cover, I can't find the booklet at the redcross site anymore.

Etsy has some fun stuff of that period too.
