Change Last Name?

How do you all feel about changing your last name??  I'm really on the fence with this issue.  I like my last name and I've had it all my life... I don't think I see the point in adopting a new identity.  Besides in most Latin American countries, women don't change their names when they get married.  However, he would like me to take his last name.

I like the way my name sounds as-is! lol. And I like the sound with it hyphenated instead of dropping mine and adding his.

I wouldn't mind doing a hyphenated thing.  But I would rather it be informal, like at work, amongst friends etc.  rather than actually legally changing my name.  Truth be told, my last name is French and unusual.  His last name is kinda unattractive and hard to spell.

At first I was reluctant to for selfish reasons. My last name is Butler and FI's last name is Williams. As you can see, I've been at the beginning of the alphabet all of my life.

I plan on keeping my maiden name and then using his last name for social stuff but I won't be changing it legally.

I'm looking forward to changing my last name, but I'll be carrying my current last name as my new middle name.

Hmm... My screen name is actually my middle name and I like that too.  I really like the idea of just using his name for social situations.  I'm hoping to convince him to hyphenate the kids names (when we have them) but I guess I'll cross that hurdle when it comes.  That will probably be confusing for the kids because that will be one crazy long name.  Ehhh,  decisions decisions.

Legally I will change my name but since I'm self employed, business wise I will hyphenate.  I guess I just dont want it to be confusing when we have kids.  Everyone has their own good reasons for doing their thing....KMB has me cracking up though :-)!

Since I was a little kid I was always excited to change my name when I got married. In Belgium after their big women's movement which was sometime after his grandparents married women stopped changing their names. His grandma's name is her married name, but after that moment when people like his mom got married they keep their maiden name.

What they do now is keep their maiden name and use their new last name only in Social settings to they would be "The Smiths" instead of "John Smith & Jane Jones" as like dating, but not married.

In talking with my FI he said I shouldn't change because over there I wouldn't be identified as his wife, but has his sister or daughter because I'd have the same last name. I decided to do the hyphen because I really want to have his last name, I just see it as a part of being married. Hypen it is for my name.

I was excited to change my last name. As a matter of fact, we returned from our honeymoon on the 28th and I changed my license on the 29th. I've been married 2 weeks and I'm almost done getting things legally changed. It was all spiritual for me.

I'm torn on the matter. I've been building my career for a few years now- I'm worried about derailing all of those connections by changing my last name suddenly. We've already decided that once we have kids, FI will stay at home with them (if I'm making enough money for that to work- health care would be an issue, too). I'm pretty sure he wants me to take his name, but we haven't really had the conversation yet. My canned answer is that when I'm at home, I'll be Mrs. Robinson (funny, right?!), but at work I'll keep my maiden name. The kids will have his last name, for sure. I just feel tied to my independence. I'm pretty sure he understands. He hasn't said otherwise...
