**DanaOcNy** or anyone else that makes cakes :)

Dana - I think I remember you saying that you make cakes.  Sorry if I am wrong :/

I like to decorate cakes, but I've never done a full cake in fondant, just used it as little decor elements on top of buttercream.  Just wondering if you've ever covered a cake in fondant and if you have any tips.

I bought this mat that is supposed to make it easier.  Here's a LINK to what I'm talking about.  Do you think this will be a good tool to use?  Oh and this is the cake that I am attempting to make. lol

Be really patient.  After you roll out the fondant to cover the whole thing, roll it on the pin like you would with a pie crust, then you need to take your tool and slowly smoth it out to get rid of the creases.  It takes a long time.  Also, since you want to do colored, you can buy pre-colored fondant, or start with a lot of white and use colored fondant added.....then kneed a lot!!!  After that, a lot of it looks like stripes and circles which are easier than flowers.  Just use an sharp knife, and circle cookie cutter to do those.  To adhere them to the previous fondant, make a sugar mixture (you can probably find the ratios online or I believe Wilton has some you can just buy).

It's really time consuming to work with, so maybe start with a practice one layer cake to learn the methods....otherwise you might get burnt out taking on that cake right away.  Good luck!

*ETA: Also you will want to work in smaller portions.....like all of your purple circles and stripes first because you don't want the fondant to dry out and crack if you have them all rolled out at once.

  • If I had the money I would go to culinary school to learn how to make awesome cakes like that and then open a little cake shop. Kind of like ACE of cakes but without some of the extreme. I'd do some non traditional cakes but I don't think I could do it to the level Duff does.

  • I agree with the previous poster, patience is key.  And powdered sugar haha.

You were right dana does make cakes! So do I! The mat will help you just make sure you cover the mat inCrisco atleast that's what I do , so the fondantt doesn't stick to it... A mat can be very helpful when covering a whole cake! Oh and Ice the cake with buttercream before the fondantGood luck
  • LOL!  What everyone has already said!  Patience Patience Patience!!!  That's the key to decorating with fondant.  I taught the classes at Michaels last year and a little this year as well and most people either love to work with fondant or they hate it.  That mat will definitely be helpful but like Patty said make sure you coat in thin layer of crisco first.  I taught the WIlton method and if you go to WIlton.com there are tons of tips and videos to watch.  That cake is super adorable but will take a long time.  Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies for all the advice.  I know it's going to take a while to complete this cake and it's going to be a bit of challenge since I have never worked with fondant.  I've always been the self taught type and maybe I'm being delusional, but I think I can actually pull this off!

I started making all the little butterflies and flowers and lollipops last night as well as baked the cakes and put the crumb coat on.  I wanted to do those fondant pieces so they could dry and be firm on the wires and sticks.  Now, I just need to cover the cakes in fondant and start the decorating.  Wish me luck!

    I'll post pics if I'm successful! :)
