Budget for Italy

Hey guys ,
We are now thinking of doing the coast of Italy . What do you think a good solid budget would be ? We want some luxury but are ok with cutting back on some meals and will switch up room levels in different towns . Thinking of amalfi , Capri , and maybe Tuscany or Florence ?

  • Plane tickets will probably be about $1100 a piece.  I'm assuming you're going in September?  Hotels will probably cost you about $200/night.  Food really depends on what you're eating, just like here in the US.  Then you need to think about how you're traveling from place to place, renting a car, taking the train, etc.
  • I'd maybe reconsider doing Amalfi AND Capri. We just stayed in Positano and it's easy to take the ferry to do day trips. FWIW, I liked Positano much more than Capri. We did 16 nights in Venice, Florence, Montepulciano, Positano, and Rome. Rented a car, ate in a range of restaurants, and stayed in mostly high end boutique hotels. When all was said and done, we probably spent around 1112k, but we could have done it for much less.

We're budgeting about $250 per night in Capri because hotels there are expensive, but only $150 in Florence, Venice, and Rome because we're going to stay in moderate hotels or apartments.  Apartments really save you money, especially if you cook some meals at home.

For food, we're budgeting about $100 per day (about 80 euro).  We are totally fine with eating cheap a lot, we don't drink alcohol, and we're cooking at the apartment sometimes.  That should still allow us a few fancy meals (once you average it all out over 15 days).

Airfare has stayed steady for us at $1400pp for next june.  But we're from houston, so Jersey's airfare to italy is probably much cheaper.

Although I think September is more of a slower season in italy, so you may get better prices on airfare and hotel.

Also, we're buying rail passes for 3 traveling days (Naples to Florence, Florence to Venice, and Venice to Rome).  I think it's about $200-250 per person.  You can buy individual train tickets too, but I'm not sure if it's easier.

Otherwise, we're relying on metro tickets, which really aren't expensive, and maybe a few cab rides.

ETA:  Our budget for 15 days is about $7800.

Yep!! Us too.  Rented an apartment in Florence for 800 euro for a week and then the apartment in Rome is 120 a night for three nights. That comes to $1400 for 10 nights for full apartments with balconies and kitchens and WASHING MACHINES!

  • I recently saw airfare to Italy for around $800 pp, which I thought was a great deal considering it's airfare to Europe. I was searching on vayama.com and expedia.com. We are planning to go there for an anniversary trip next October so hopefully the airfare will be that price next year!

  • We went to Italy last September for 14 days and visited Rome, Florence, Cinque Terre, Milan, and Venice. Our airfare was essentially free (used frequent flier miles) and we spent almost exactly $5000. We had a few spurlge experiences (cooking class in Rome, guided tours in Venice, etc) and stayed in several nice places. What helped our budget was doing things like renting an apartment in Rome versus staying in a hotel (through rentalinrome.com). I have a list of my blog entries from our trip here:
