PSA: A BIG reason not to play softball (or sports in general) before your wedding!

So I kinda figured I would be taking spring softball season off next spring because I will have a lot going on right before the wedding and all. Well, tonight I added another reason not to play:

So I was playing catcher tonight, and there was a play at the plate (which is why I play catcher, I live for plays at the plate!). The throw from the outfield was PERFECT, in the exact right spot, I caught it, and went to tag the runner. Now in our league, since it's a recreational league, the rules state that if there is a close play, the runner has to either slide or surrender (meaning the have to give up and run around or get out of the way). Well, this guy decides that instead of doing either of those, that he's going to JUMP over me to get to home plate. Yeah, I'm short, but I'm not THAT short. So he kneed me in the head. This bump was about 3 times this size when I first got off the ground. So yeah, needless to say, I am NOT playing softball before the wedding!

Oh my goodness!  That looks crazy!  I hope it heals up way more quickly than it looks like it's going to.  And great advice.

UFF! I have to chime in on agreeing with you! A few years ago while playing catcher I scratched my cornea something fierce. But the dude who pitched it, is now my soon to be husband..... ( he was impressed that I went out for beers afterwards even sporting a pirate patch) So I guess I can't swear the softball off completely! Just not too close the wedding as you say!

    Oh ouch, that looks painful!

I play catcher too!  I had a ball hit me square in the eye a few years ago.  The girl at bat, tried to swing at the ball but tipped it & it came straight back at me.  I had a nice black eye for a few weeks.  Good thing I had sunglasses on, or it probably would have broken my eye socket!  Good suggestion to the ladies!  = )

    Hope you heal quickly!

Yikes! We also play on a softball league and very much considered not playing the few weeks before our wedding for fear of that...I'm too competitive, so I ended up playing all the games and thankfully only had a small bruise on my leg that was covered up by my dress anyhow. Also had the added stress that H is our pitcher, and I knew there was no convincing him of not playing before the wedding. Thankfully he avoided any bruises/injuries too, but it was a tense few games!

Thanks for all the get better wishes ladies - it worked! Well for the most part. The bump is pretty much gone, but now I have a black eye! Very strange. Thankfully it really didn't hurt that bad - I only had a headache on Tuesday. But still - so not playing in the spring. And I'm very competitve so it's def gonna be hard for me to sit a season out!

One good thing that came from this - turns out it's legal in ASA rules for someone to jump over you to try and get to the base. But now in our league they are going to make it illegal in order to avoid future injuries like mine. So that's something. :)

Holy crap, that looks extremely painful. :( Hope everything heals up well, and be careful with the headaches to make sure you don't have recurring concussions or anything.
