Tell Us Tuesday

Let's hear those engagement stories!  Also, did you know the engagement was coming or was it a complete surprise?  How long had you been together before he proposed (or you proposed!)?  How long will you be together before the wedding?

Fi and I got engaged one year to the date he asked me to be his girlfriend. Now it wasn't one year that we had been dating because it took me a week to answer his question. That would have been the following week. (Yes it took me a week to answer him)

It was a huge surprise to me. I was working all day and he was off. I came home from work and opened the door to find candles and flowers all over the house. I was really excited but still just suspected nothing and thought he was being romantic. I walked in and called for him. As I came around the corner I realized he was dressed up and it kind of threw me for a loop, He started talking to me and then got down on one knee. He told me he had a question for me and hoped it wouldn't take me a week to answer him. Then he asked me to be his wife. Which I said yes too of course.

Then he told me to get ready because we had dinner plans. As I was almost done getting ready he told me he had a limo coming shortly to pick us up. Then we headed to the melting pot for dinner. Dinner was amazing and I was so happy.

After dinner he wanted to go get a drink some place. He told the limo driver to just take us someplace. Little did I know he had this all planned out. We went to Baily's pub and he had arranged for all of our friends and family to meet us there.

After a little while of hanging out he informed me that I had the next day off work. He had called my boss and explained everything and asked ahead of time.

As you can see Fi did and amazing job. However, one of my favorite things was that he not only asked my parents permission but he called my brother and sister and asked them. Family is so important to me so knowing we had there blessing was amazing.

We will be together 2 1/2 years when we get married.

FI proposed in Campus Martius Park after dinner at Roast. I was shocked. I had made the reservations for dinner b/c it was Detroit Restaurant Week -- so the dinner was really nothing "special".

That day, I was pretty annoyed with him because he didn't come over until it was time for dinner. I didn't understand why he didn't want to spend the day with me. At dinner, I relaxed a bit and then on the walk home I made a comment like "aren't you glad I didn't mention our nice dinner on FB, everyone would have thought we were getting engaged, but really it was just a regular date night." Yes, I actually said that. In all fairness, a friend had just done that the week before and everyone had posted that she would get engaged (and she did!) So I had some reason to mention it, but still, kinda awkward when five minutes later he walked me into the park and got down on one knee!

He'd planned the whole thing...he had been at my parents that afternoon. My mom already knew he'd bought the ring, but my dad had been out of town so he was there to talk to him. Once he told both of them, he felt like he couldn't wait any longer to propose!

We just celebrated our 4 year anniversary in June, so we'll be together almost 5 years by the time we get married.

FI proposed when we had been together for a little over 2 1/2 years (I did know it was coming, it was just a matter of when).

Early on a Sunday morning he woke me up (7:30 to be exact!) to tell me that he had a surprise for me and that I needed to come downstairs. He had draped ribbon throughout the living room/kitchen with sticky notes- each one listing a different reason as to why he loved me. The ribbon went over the door to the basement and the ring was hanging down with the last note asking- "Will You?" I turned around and there he was waiting for me!

We when we get married in October we will have been together for 3 1/2 years.

FI proposed in Vegas :) We had been dating 2 years and had started a tradition of going to Vegas over Memorial Day weekend. Everyone was sure he would propose (even the lady at my nail salon!), but I figured we had another year.

We had dinner at Mixx overlooking the strip and he reserved a private dining table for us - which was more like a pod. He got up, walked around the table, got down on one knee and proposed. I immediately started crying and FI swears that I never actually said yes, I just nodded and cried!

When I called my sister I blurted out "we're getting married!!" She assumed that we were eloping (being in Vegas and all...) and started yelling at me. I probably should have phrased it as "we just got engaged!"

Here's a pic of us in the pod just after I said yes :)

We got engaged while on vacation in Puerto Rico..it was pretty funny because I am a teacher and my students knew all about the upcoming trip (I taught social studies and we were studying Puerto Rico) and they all were convinced that FI was going to propose.  We had talked about getting married, talked about rings and actually went to try some on so I knew it was eventually coming but I honestly didn't think it was going to be that quick!

I got a tiny bit suspicious on the 1st day of our trip when I offered to get something from his backpack for him and he VERY QUICKLY said that he'd get it (though it was at my feet).  I thought...hmmm is he hiding something in there?

The 2nd day of our trip we ended up taking a walk from our hotel down into Old San Juan.  We were along the coast over by the beautiful capitol building & the San Cristibol fort.  We kind walked up to the top of hill that we were not supposed to walk to and you could see the whole city and the ocean and it was just gorgeous.  He pulled me into this hug that was realllllly long and I could tell he was trying to get something out of his pocket and he got down on one knee and proposed! It was really very perfect.  My only request for when we got engaged was that it was just something between him and I and so I was very happy.

After I wanted to call my family and then I was like "wait..they all already know right?" (we talked a few times about how he HAD to ask my dad first) and he said "no...I knew he'd tell your sisters and they'd tell you so I was just going to ask for his blessing later".  SERIOUSLY?! haha so I made him call my dad the next night and "ask for his permission".  I called my family 2 nights after we actually got engaged and pretended that it had just happened haha.  I actually was happy about that later because it was nice to enjoy our engagement all by ourselves for a few days first :)

I have known my fiance for just about 16 years now. We dated when I was a freshman in highschool and he was a junior. It was young love and we were dumb. Neither one of us realized just what we had (even though I told me friend "one day i'm going to marry him"). we both moved on with our lives. He got married and had a child, i moved on and had 2 sons. Summer 2010 we reconnected. We were never apart. We moved in together January and I knew I wanted to spend my life with him. We had talked about getting married in the future but wasn't sure. February 10th he said he had to go out somewhere but wouldn't tell me. Which was weird, cause he always told me where he was going. He came home. Everything was fine. Friday the 11th, my kids were with my mom and I was home alone. He came home from work early just as I was walking out of the bathroom from my shower. He grabbed my hand and said "Come to the living room, I want you to hear a song". I was very confused. He put on the song "History in the Making" by Darius Rucker, held me tight and started to cry. I was thinking... what in the hell is wrong with this guy?!?

Then he got down on one knee, crying, asking me to be his wife. Of course I said yes! I found out the night before he took my dad out to dinner to ask for his permission. I had no clue!!! Later Friday night we went to MGM grand with my parents for dinner and some gambling. It was a great night!

FI and I were dating for 1 month shy of 4 years when he proposed. He had just accpeted a job in North Carolina and I had agreed to re-locate with him. I had been expecting him to propose before we moved out of state together, but wasn't sure if he was in the right position to buy a ring at that time.

It was the Saturday of Valentine's Day weekend and getting engaged was the LAST thing on my mind. We went out for drinks at a restaurant in our home town. When parking, Pat was trying to get a parking spot on the street, which was weird. We never bother with trying to parallel park, but on this particular day he was very irritated that he couldn't get a certain spot.

As soon as we got to the restaurant for drinks, Pat kept finding reasons to leave the table (smoke, bathroom, etc). My friend, Megan who was bartending and I were just chit chatting and she asked if I thought we were going to get engaged soon. I just said no way! It's Valentine's weekend, he would never do it then. Soon after, Pat's sister texted me asking us to meet her and her FI at another bar.

We left, and Pat made an excuse for us to cross the street (the reason he wanted to park in a certain spot was b/c he had planned to propose there). As we were walking by the restaurant we met at (that had since gone out of business) he noticed a picture taped to the front window. It was a picture taken on a St. Patrick's day party bus, on the day we got together. I was so confused!! He looked at me and said "this is the first picture taken of the two of us as a couple. I want you to know that I want to be with you, in pictures and everything else, for the rest of my life". I started crying hysterically, and said YES YES YES. There were so many people driving up and down the street but we were all alone. It was perfect!

Turns out, our family and friends were all in on it and they soon met up with us for drinks after.

The picture that was taped up. It's now in a frame in our bedroom.

We will be together for 5 1/2 years when we get married.
