Postcards vs Cards for Save the Date

We are considering doing postcards for save-the-dates instead of a card/magnet inside a regular envelope. Has anyone ever done this? I worry about them getting banged up in the mail/smudged or getting that sticker the post office sometimes puts on them.

Re: Postcards vs Cards for Save the Date

  • I am doing STD postcards as well to save $$ on the STDs and postage, saw an add banner for 100 free from Vistaprint (I updated to all color, added shipping, spent under $10).  You can upgrade the paper to a heavier stock, not much additional $$ at all.  I know the stick you're talking about from the post office, I would plan on that happening just in case, and avoid putting information in that area.  As the mailing process goes, I am sure they will get a little beat up, but that's the risk with postcards you have to be willing to take!

If you are thinking of using something like Vistaprint there are ALWAYS discounts going on, yesterday when I was playing with invitation design there was 50% off all wedding items, and 25% off shipping.  If you chose to go with the card and envelope approach, white envelopes are included for free, and with the 50% discount you can get the cards for a great price!

    Good luck!
  • Lots of people, including myself send postcard STDs. Yes, they may get a little bagnged, but up I have received 'regular' mail that is all wrinkled..the envelope didn't stop that from happening.
And we all have to be honest, a good amount of people throw them out.
    I wouldn't worry about it!
  • I'm doing postcards for the save the dates. I think it's a cool idea, especially for destination weddings. I used a picture of the mountains on ours because that's where we're going. I think it is practical and a great way to save money.
  • Yes, they're popular.  And you save on postage.

Inevitably any mail may get damaged/smudged in the postal process, but use indelible ink and then mail them on a non-rainy day.  If they're damaged when they arrive, your guests will know it was the postal service and not you.
  • Thanks, I really appreciate the responses!
  • I did postcard STDs and got great responses from my guests.

We're having a DW so used an image of our destination, we purchased at zazzle.com  and yes you will get the barcode stamp/sticker along the bottom edge.

A few things I would change: google USPS requirements to check, I had typed our website & password along the bottom border and this is supposed to be a "clear" space since the barcode markings go over this section - so a few people couldn't read the info.  Also, I didn't pay attention too much to the actual size of the postcard - my mom said it looked like a junk mail advertisement and told me she almost threw it away (but she's the only one that made this comment).  Probably both these issues would have been solved by going with a larger size so there was enough room.
