Fireworks

I'm super close to picking my venue--looks like it will be May 2012. One of the advantages of the venue is they can do fireworks onsite--at least that's what the saleslady said, though I've been warned it is very costly.

I'm only in the very preliminary stages of looking into this--and as I've said--I haven't even booked the venue yet. It may end up being to crazy and too expensive, but something I always thought was pretty neat . A girl can dream, can't she?

Anyone out there who's doing or who has done fireworks at their wedding?
Anyone with ideas on cost?

And for those of you that haven't done this, do you think this is neat or too over-the-top?

It's very pricey.  McCloone's down in Asbury Park offers it, and it runs $5000+ (http://www.timmcloonessupperclub.com/pdf/menus/banquets/Enhance-Your-Affair.pdf).  Personally, I feel it's too over the top and very self-indulgent.  There's better uses for that kind of money, like getting a top photographer or an awesome band.  However, if you think your day would not be complete without a fireworks display, then go for it if you have the funds.

I've never been to a wedding with fireworks before, but I think it could be a cool touch. If it's in your budget, I say go for it!

We looked into fireworks and I want to say it started at like $3,500+++ and it was a big scene and a half and you need to get a lot of permits and so forth. We passed on it.

I think if u can afford it and its always been ur dream go for it. Ive never been to a wedding w/ one, but if I was, I would love it- I love fireworks. For me personally, Im just way to frugal to do it. If i had the extra $5k in the budget, I just couldnt bring myself to do it, not that I dont like it, but because it only lasts for a few minutes, etc. As long as u arent skipping on important things like food, alcohol, band/DJ etc for the fireworks, I say do it :)

My best friend had fireworks at her wedding (which was in Italy, so her info wouldn't help you), and to be honest, I wasn't a fan.  I don't like anything that requires stopping the party, gathering the guests, and having them watch something for a period of time.  The 5 or 10 minute show probably ate up 20 minutes of reception time that could have been used for drinking or dancing.

Also, private fireworks shows usually aren't all that impressive.  People have seen fireworks a lot in their lives, and particularly if your wedding is around July 4th, will see lots of fireworks in the same period of time.  So I don't think what you do will be earthshattering.

Our venue allows fireworks, and our venue coordinator discussed them with us once (apparently a lot of couples at our venue do it).  It would require lots of permits, the local fire department would have to be there, and the venue said it usually costs around $10,000 (I don't know how accurate that was).  That seemed like a pain, and it seemed way too over-the-top for my tastes.

IMO, I think you can find other ways to spend the money if you have it. While fireworks are always nice to see, I agree that it can be a tad overboard. I could find a ton of other ways to spend the extra $5000!

Thanks for the advice, everyone.  If I didn't do the fireworks, would you recommend sparklers? What else could I incorporate that would give the party a nice touch? Suggestions?

We didn't investigate it as it doesn't appeal to me, but I think Perona Farms must do it as they show a number of pictures with fireworks over the facility.

It's all about what you value.  Personally, I'm not big on that kind of stuff.  I would much rather put that money into a band, but that's a matter of personal taste.

My friend is getting married at The Palace in Somerset. She is allowed to do fireworks but opted out of it. If you are going to do fireworks, you have to pay a TONS of permits and she also had to have the Rescue Squad there (any give them a fee for their time) and possibly the same for the local fire dept. (fee also). I think with permits and fee charges it was $7,000. I don't think that even included the fireworks!

As others said, to stop the party for that would just eat away at a TON of time. Unless you wanted to "end" the party a little earlier and have them as everyone was leaving. I think sparklers give the same effect. Remember also, if you have children attending your reception they may get freaked out by all the noise. Just as an FYI.

I should begin by saying that I LOVE fireworks! One of my favorite holidays is 4th of July! We explored doing fireworks. The Palace has set packages for them, Perona Farms has a wonderful vendor out of PA that does theirs too!!! Pricing tended to start around $5,000 for a 5 minute program and went up to $10,000 + for longer and more extensive programs. The venue we ended up choosing is an estate in a residential area which prohibits the use of fireworks. As stated earlier, they do require permits, which can be a huge headache. One place told us we'd have to have the fire department there just incase lol
I may do sky lanterns instead. Still tossing it around. We bought a bunch online and set them off with friends on new years- super easy and look absolutely beautiful!! Our venue actually got really excited when I asked them if we could use them there lol We would be the first couple to do it there and they've been dying to get shots of them on their property!  So we'll see! But just wanted to throw another option out to you!!!
Best of luck! I know you'll have a fabulous day :o)

Can you tell me more about the Sky Lanterns? What are they?

There are several options available to new Brides to enhance your special day! Gerb walks down the driveway as you leave coupled with a mini finale, Table top sparklers to add an extra spark of excitement, and more. Permits are nothing you should have to even worry about. There are a lot of them but the company you work with should pull all of them leaving you to enjoy your special day. Simple effects should start around $800 to $1000. Displays can also be done very close to your audience safely. After all I have personally shot hundreds of displays across the country I should know.
