Groom's Cake

Even though it's not a wedding staple, my FI has dropped a few hints about wanting a groom's cake.  My MOH had a groom's cake (shaped like an armadillo like the movie Steel Magnolia's) but because of the wedding cake and cookies, no one even cut into it.

I am thinking of having the groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner so that it will serve as dessert and he'll also be thrilled.  Has anyone done a groom's cake and if so, do you have any recommendations of bakeries.  I know there are so many bakeries but not sure if they all do groom's cakes.

Thanks!!

We had a groom's cake that was a surprise from the BM (my BIL).  No one touched it but it was AWESOME.

But, I have no idea who made it for him.  He said he met some lady who made them as a side business and she whipped it up for him.  I think having it at the rehearsal dinner is a really good idea, because between the wedding cake, cookies, and chocolate fountain, no one cut into ours until H & I got home the next day.

A lot of people on here use Cakes By Tammy. You could start with her.

Also, Sue from "Very Special Desserts" does them as well.

    I will break into it!

The only item I will not compromise on...my bouquet of all purple tulips wrapped in a swatch from my Mom's wedding dress.

What a great cake!! I love it!!

There is a local lady who I know would be able to do a great cake based on her website but her prices tend to average at $7 per slice.  I find that utterly ridiculous.

We had one... no recs on bakeries though, since DH's godmother made it. I was going to have it at the RD at first, but we ended up having it at the reception, where it was devoured. I guess it just depends on your guests... we didn't have a ton of sweets either, just the standard wedding cake and cookies.

I'm from Kentucky, where no one has cookies, just groom's cakes. A lot of bakeries can do some pretty cool ones and it can really reflect your FI's personality.

Since I am not having cookies (I know, terrible in Western Pa, but only 15 of our guests are from Pittsburgh) we will do a groom's cake at the wedding probably. But since you will have cookies, I think it's a great idea to have it at the RD. Just remember that the more complex the design, the higher the cost typically.

I had a groom's cake at the RD and it was a big hit. We did it then because at the reception we had the cake, cookie tables AND a huge chocolate table. I had a woman who does these on the side, so if you want her #, send me a PM! She charged about $125-150 depending on size (mine was made to feed 50 people).

I had a groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner and it was a great idea! :-) I didn't get anything fancy, just a cute monkey cake :-)

I just used the same bakery we used for our wedding cake, which was Signature Desserts.

I got my wedding cake from creative cakes in robinson and she does an awesome job and is very reasonable. She gets pretty booked up but you can go on her website and see the cakes she has made.

I think Creative Cakes is who I used, I know she was in Robinson and her website seemed decent. She was reasonably priced. The cake itself tasted awesome. And it looked fine. But it wasn't as good as I was hoping for. She also asked questions that made me question why I had hired her. For instance, the cake was supposed to be a replica of DH's HS hockey jersey. I sent her pictures. Everyone knows what an athletic jersey looks like, right? She sent me the drawing mock up and she had the name on the bottom of the jersey, underneath the number. She seemed confused when I mentioned that the name goes above the number, between the shoulder blades.

For what we paid ($90), it was good enough though and DH was touched. It did taste totally awesome-choc cake with rasp filling. I liked it better than our wedding cake!
