Duplex Frustrations

FI and I want to live in a duplex or a small house when we get married.  We're kind of picky about what we want, so we've started to hunt now.  If we find something early, I'll move into it and he'll join me after the wedding.
Everything that we've found that we've liked at a reasonable rate has been too good to be true.  The numbers we call are disconnected numbers or they are houses that are listed for sale elsewhere and then someone takes that information and makes a rental page.
I don't get it.  When we leave e-mails, nobody contacts us back so it's not like they're trying to scam us out of our money or information.  It's literally like they're doing it to piss people off.  They have way too much time on their hands.

UGH.  Thanks for listening.  This is just getting so frustrating.  We found the PERFECT place back in October, but we wreen't ready to move into a duplex yet. Argh.

  • I'm sorry :( why don't you go through a realtor so you know it's legit?
  • Realtors don't do rentals do they? Don't they just do sales?

Try a property management company. Also some realtors have a property management department

yeah I think they only do sales. I thought you were looking to buy, not rent. Sorry

I have actually heard of people using Realtors to find places to rent. I'm not sure how many realtors actually do this because I'm sure there isn't as much money in it as buying  but I have heard of it being done before.
  • We had the same frustrations when we were looking for our current place!  I'm sorry that's happening to you too, but hang in there!

SOME realtors do rentals as well as sales, it entirely depends on the company.  When we started renting our house, we had found it on Craigslist, but when our landlord added to it to turn it into a duplex, he used a realtor to market it.  It certainly can't hurt to call and ask local realtors - if you can find one, it could make your search a LOT easier!

  • Have you tried googling duplex for rent in _____?  I've found places before from sites off of google.

  • To find our duplex, we just kept a watch on the classifieds in newspaper of the town we were wanting to move to.  I think we got a pretty good deal; I love our place and I don't want to leave.

Unfortunately, FI wants to move so he has less of a commute, which I understand, but that also means our living expenses will go way up, and my commute will go to 40 mins to over an hour (We work in complete opposite directions).  Grr.

  • Check out leasing agencies.  They are licensed like a Realtor but only do rentals so they are paid by the landlord and free to you.  Here are some in your area

Your other option is to search yourself on sites like hotpads.com or oodle.com

These will typically be independant rentals.  This is where I found both my tenants.
