Maybe this will disappear....

But if not, I'm bored to tears, frustrated with my colleague, and miss when this board actually worked, so let's chat!

1)  If you had a time machine right now, but it only worked one way (could not come back to now), where would you go?

2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate?

3)  If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do?

  • 1) If you had a time machine right now, but it only worked one way (could not come back to now), where would you go?

The late 1960s/early 70s. I would be a bra-burning feminist. Like BFFs with Gloria Steinem.

    2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate?

Hmm well I am poor and hate my job....so I think I'll go with rich and hate my job!! Haha actually no, there's no way that I could have a career that doesn't make a difference. So even if that job doesn't make a lot of money, as long as it makes a difference in people's lives, I'll be happy.

    3) If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do?

Women's equal rights everywhere, so women aren't second class in other countries.

  • 1)  If you had a time machine right now, but it only worked one way (could not come back to now), where would you go?

I'd go 6 weeks from now to May 12th.  I'm really looking forward to the drive up north - we're stopping to visit friends near Parris Island (hopefully will see GGirl again like I did last summer!), stopping to see friends in DC (hopefully will see Kara & Binx & Irish!), stopping to see FI's family in Syracuse and going to a clam bake, and then to my parents' near Boston.  And Sammy is going to come visit me this summer!  And I hope to see Irish in Boston at some point after she moves.  So I'm really looking forward to this summer, but I'd be very happy to skip over the next 6 weeks of hellish work, packing, dealing with the landlord, etc.

    2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate?

Poor and a job I love.  I can't stand this anymore, though it would make it a bit better if I was making a reasonable salary.

    3)  If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do?

I'm not sure how I'd word it, but it would be anti-bigotry.  There'd be no discrimination tolerated towards women, minorities, race, different religious groups, homosexuals, transexuals, etc.  Live and let live.  Each one is allowed to practice as they see fit, provided they don't infringe on anyone else's right to do the same.  I suppose that's the concept behind Libertarianism?

    1)  If you had a time machine right now, but it only worked one way (could not come back to now), where would you go?
I would jump to my wedding!

    2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate?
Shallow I know but I'd rather be rich and hate my job. I hate stressing about money. It's the worst

    3)  If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do?
    Gay marriage legal everywhere!
  • Zims, read the book 'The Millionaire Next Door'.  It will change how you view about big salary vs. worrying about money.  Interestingly, a lot of people who make big salaries worry MORE about money because their spending increases with their income and they aren't saving.

I'm so stressed and it's completely my fault. With the beauty job I have they made it sound so easy to promote so I'd buy products to stay in qualification for a promotion. And the credit card debt started. I can't get it down and just got screwed at work and was counting on $1000 more than they paid me. I feel so guilty and I know it stresses FI out. My windshield chipped in December and was patched. They said if it grew the whole windshield would need to be replaced. It didn't grow until 2 days ago and now it's a 5 inch crack. Our insurance has a $500 deductible so there's no point using it but it's $310 and FI has to pay it because I can't. I feel awful about all of it<div>
</div><div>ETA: I'm quitting that job. Too much stress and not worth what little I made</div>
  • Read the book.  Seriously.  And freeze the credit card or cut it up - no more credit cards until you pay it off.  Talk to someone about creating a budgeting plan so you can get out of debt.  I've been there, but in only 6 months, I'm totally out of debt and actually putting money in savings.  You can do it!  It's about changing your mindset.

Yeah I've definitely gotten better. I'm not using it, just paying it as I can. I have 2 other cards but they have nothing on them and I rarely use them (one is a VS card that I only use when I need a new bra and I use coupons). I'm irritated with the pay at work. They said 90-99% sold is 8% and I got 6%. She told me originally I made my quota and that would've paid my balance. Working on commission sucks sometimes
  • 1) I'm with binx. I'd go back to the 60's. Specially the summer of love in San Fran. I have always believed I was born too late. 2) rich. Which kinda goes against my answer in #1 but since I live in this day and age, I'm not ashamed to admit that I'd like to be rich. 3) I can't pick just one

    2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate?
Luckily what I love to do gets a pretty nice pay. But, it doesn't really matter, I know how to live within my means and be happy.

    3)  If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do? What i want to say would be flame worthy... so I'll just say...World Peace.

  • Well, I would say get rid of abortion..but it isn't that easy... I'm very much in favor of woman getting health care and BC whenever they need it, even free BC...whatever. I'm even sort of okay about medically needed abortions..I can see the reasons.

But I generally dislike how abortions are treated like an undo button. We all make choices that change our life daily, and just because a child doesn'tfit within the plan right now, it is okay to end it. i guess i wish there was more weight put in preventing and teaching prevention. Instead of this...I mean 99.9% is pretty effective. It is a sticky situation and it takes someone a lot smarter than me to figure it out.

  • 1)  If you had a time machine right now, but it only worked one way (could not come back to now), where would you go?
I would go back to 1971, London. I'd find Freddie Mercury and become the bassist for the newly form band, Queen. (Back then they lost the bassist to what was a band originally named Smile, and when they turned into Queen, they got a new bassist. True Facts.)

    2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate?
Poor, loving my job. Like I do now :)

    3)  If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do?
    See Cal's perfect answer.
Oh, and to answer your question about Libertarianism, yes. At least the way I view my libertarian beliefs.

</div><div>As for the other two questions:</div><div>I would go back to when FI and I first met. Those were some cuh-razy times. :)</div><div>
</div><div>I would definitely rather be poor and love what I do. I'm not a big fan of money. I mean, obviously in terms of paying the bills and having something to live on it's fine, but I think that having a lot of it is far more trouble than it's worth.</div>

  • I was debating between gay marriage legal or abortion legal. I'm very pro choice but understand people have different views.
  • 1) If you had a time machine right now, but it only worked one way (could not come back to now), where would you go?  10 years in the future.  I have no idea why except I always think about what I will be doing in 10 years so then I would have the answer.

    2) Would you rather be poor and work at a job you love or be rich and work at a job you hate? I have been in a job that I hated and really wanted to just quit and go bar tend or be a street performer.  I didn't care about how much I got paid.  After that job I realized that you have to be happy in your job because if you are not it will spill over into other parts of your life.  I was the worst person to be around then.

    3) If you were able to make one permanent legal change world wide, what would you do? There are so many things this is hard to choose from.  I would say it would be something with education, the right to an education and the funding of such.

  • What is it Bill Clinton (on my list) said about abortion? That in an ideal world it should be safe, legal, and rare. I do agree with this, I think that if more people had access to birth control of all kinds and methods of implementation, that a lot of things about the situation would be better. I will say that I'm totally despising the way that the (mostly) male politicians are talking about women who have abortions, like they don't know what they're doing. No matter how a woman approaches it, with guilt/remorse, matter-of-factly, cavalierly--she knows what she's doing. She knows that she's going into a place pregnant and coming out not pregnant.  (most) Women aren't morons.

    1) While I like the idea of going back in time, I also love so much about my life now that changing it seems wrong. Right now I'd like to fast-forward to the end of April/beginning of May so that I can see my mom, buy my dress, and see FI again.

    2) I'd like to say poor and love it, because that's kind of where I am now. I'd like to be able to work at what I love and not worry so much about money, and I'm almost in a position to do it. However, I might take rich and hates it for a couple of years to build a nest egg. I'll admit that part of how I was raised is that it doesn't really matter if you like your job/career, your job is how you make money, you find fulfillment elsewhere.

    3) I'm with Binx and Cal, it's something that's becoming more and more of an issue in today's world when you'd think it would have become less and less of one.

  • Hey Zims? I had a really bad time with keeping my finances in line, but I came up with a system that REALLY helps me. I'll share so that maybe it can help you, too. Here goes:
Every pay check I get gets divided up on the day I get paid by what's already spent (like bills) vs. my cost of living money.

For example: Lets say I made $1000 this paycheck.
from day 1-15 of this month, I have the following bills due:
    Insurance: $95
    Credit Card payment: $100
    Cell Phone: $90
    Car Payment: $250
so, I take my bills total ($535)
Subtract it from my total Check ($465)
and then figure out what is a reasonable amount to have per day. My number is $20 a day. In order to spend $20 a day, I would need $300. Cool! There is an extra $165! Now here, I do 1 of 2 things. I either put that in savings, or I put it towards the credit card, and gas.

If you're like me, you don't spend $20 a day. This helps because you also can spend a little more than $20 in one day. In that case, lets say I spent $45 one day, but no money the last 2 days... I simply re calculate my total amount by dividing it with the remaining days til the next payday.

An excel sheet is really helpful. I can send you mine if you want to try this out!
HTH! Sorry for the wall o text! LOL
  • CAB that's a fantastic spending idea! We recently had someone help do a budget (fleet and family services, I needed it not H) with us and they went into so much detail for everything and that really really helped me. I need to be able to see what I spend.

1- I'm really happy with where I am right now and I love that
2- A job that I love, I worked at a job I hated and made better money - it just wasn't worth it, not worth the stress and emotional burden it took on me. I am MUCH happier since I left.

3- Religious Freedom everywhere. It's wrong to persecute someone for their religious or nonreligious beliefs, no one should be put in jail/killed for their religious (or nonreligious) beliefs.

I can see where you're coming from. I am 100% pro-choice, but in an ideal world, I would love if no woman were ever even put in the position of having to make that decision. I wish parents paid more attention to their kids and what they're doing and who they're doing it with. I wish every parent could and would have many open conversations with their kids. I wish health classes started earlier and were better at explicitly explaining how reproduction works (and fulling explain myths, etc.). I wish every woman had easy and free access to birth control.

But right now that's just not happening. So I'm all for abortion being an option if that is the right choice for that individual.
