Detroit Church

My fiance and I are getting married in Downtown Detroit next August. We have everything booked except for a ceremony location. My fiance is not religious, while I grew up Catholic. I would like to get married in a church but I am having trouble finding a church that is flexible in terms of performing the ceremony. We would like a nondenominational church/ceremony and we would really love for the church to be downtown so it easy to go from the church to the reception.

Does anyone have any suggestions? THANK YOU!

Re: Detroit Church

  • I personally don't know of any nondenominational churches in the downtown area. I know of several Catholic churches that will marry non-members for a fee and they would certainly do a service without communion but it's still going to be a Catholic/Christian ceremony. In this case, you might be limited to performing the ceremony in your reception space or compromising and agreeing to a religious service in a church.

  • Where are you having your reception? Are you opposed to a ceremony outside of the church? Most churches will require Christian based premarital counseling and require that both people are people of faith.

  • I used the masonic temple in detroit chapel. It's not a church but I looks like one on the inside and it's beautiful. I ran into a similiar issue except our prob was that our wedding was the first weekend of lent and so no catholic churches would let us use the church bc they were planning events. Anyways, you would have to bring someone in to marry you but you could always bring in a pastor, reverend, or possibly a very lenient priest to perform the ceremony. Dorothy at the masonic is pretty great to work with.
  • Thank you everyone!

Our reception is at the Detroit Athletic Club and we don't want to have both the ceremony and reception in the same place. We are open to having our ceremony outside a church. So if you know of any beautiful places to get married downtown that accomodates 175 people i'd love the recommendations!

And I will most certainly check into the masonic temple!

    Thanks you guys!
  • The masonic is definitely big enough for that amount of people. If you want to see some of the shots from the masonic you can go to the blog for my photographer at:

There are some great shots and you aren't forced to even have the same setup of chairs for guests, they will set it up anyway you want....
