How heavy is too heavy for a cake topper?

I've been looking for a cake topper, but they are all way to expensive for me to buy and use once, so I was going to make one. I'm pretty crafty so it should come out fine, but I just don't know how heavy it can be. so... How heavy is too heavy?

  • The ONLY person who can answer this is the person who makes your cake.  different cakes can be more dense or less dense than others.  It depends on the structure, recipe, and many other factors.  Once you have chosen your baker and your cake you can get an answer to that question.
  • Talk to your cake decorator.  If your topper has a decently sized base, they may be able to add extra support into the cake similar to how it is done for tiers.  If your topper doesn't have a base and you are using fondant, it's possible to put a plate between the frosting and the fondant, but the fondant would have to be removed from the top tier before serving, and it would still need a sturdy support system.

Other than that, the biggest factor is the density of the cake, which varies from baker to baker.

Technically a good support system should be able to hold a lot of weight (think of cakes from shows that weigh hundreds of pounds).  You still don't want to go crazy...  And I recommend to keep the weight balance/center of gravity as close to the base as you can - top heavy can be scary.
  • You would put some dowel rods in the cake then put your topper or a base on then your topper so it would hold it from sinking into your cake.  This is how the bakers do it, unless they are very light.
