Registry????

My fiance and I have lived together for a few years now. We don't need any kitchen stuff, bed linens or towels. I know that people on here seem to be against registries that aren't traditional, but what should we register for???? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is what I did.  For one month keep a notepad out and write down things you may need to upgrade, need extras of, or find useful.  I did this and was surprised at how much I came up with.  There were several things in the kitchen ranging from small utensils and gadgets to small appliances.  Extra towels and sheets are always needed. And don't forget things that you want but just don't have the money to purchase or would never think to purchase because of the price (we registered for a Dyson).

If you really can't find anything to register for then don't.  When people ask tell them you're saving for _______ or that you guys really don't need anything.

ETA: DH and I lived together for 7 years before we married, it is possible to find things to register for.

  • Is there anything that you want to "upgrade"?  Like really nice sheets or towels, nice kitchen appliances or a fancy coffee-maker?   Your old stuff could be sold at a garage sale or donated to charity.

I think it's fine to register for just about anything that the two of you could use together -- like a digital camera, camping equipment, board games, etc.  A lot of people register for home improvement stuff too, like tools, drills, laser levels, or whatever.

There is a lot of talk on here about honeymoon registries.  I don't like them because most of them will take a fee out of what people give you, so you don't get the whole ammount.  Also, with most of them your guests think they are getting you a couples massage or dive lesson, and you end up just getting a check from the company (minus the fee).  I think your guests would be pretty upset to find out that instead of that $100 massage, you got a check for $90 (just an example).   I think there are some companies that DON'T charge fees, but I would still be pretty careful about honeymoon registries because a lot of people don't like them.

If you have a small registry, then a lot of people will get the hint and just give you cash or gift cards to the store where you registered.

  • PPs have good suggestions.  Do you guys have a home and want to upgrade stuff?  I'd consider a place like Home Depot, too - a little more "untraditional", but we've spent so much money there in the past year on lawn/gardening stuff, power tools, light fixtures, etc.  They also have some more decorative stuff like light switch covers, cabinet knobs/handles, shelves, etc.

Maybe if you guys just went shopping at a place you are thinking of registering for, seeing everything they have might  make it more apparent of what you guys want (it doesn't always have to be a need) .

If you keep your registries small, people will probably just give you cash anyways, which everyone can use.

  • Fi and I have lived together for almost 5 years now. We did the notepad for items last few months as PP did. We are looking for dishes to upgrade since we have been using yard sale and other dishes. Upgrading to a full set of cooking pots. Might register for a grill or Home Depot giftcards. Do you need any organizing stuff? New side tables?  I know best buy has those giftcards or fundsonline that you can have people donate to what you are saving for if you want a new tv or camera or something. Believe no fees.
